Hi Bodzy, Saw your entry somewhere about Eddie Jones, from Gorton, I think it might be the Eddie jones who was in my class at school, had a younge brother Georgie and also an older brother, can't remember his name.We had a a teacher who was very small called Mr. Brown and Eddie Jones locked him in a cupboard once. We were all to scared to go and tell the headmaster so had to just sit and listen to him banging on the door to be let out!!!It wasn't util a prefect came in to collect the late list and found us all sitting there without a teacher, he went and told the headmaster.Don't think he lasted long at our school after that!!!

Olly,
Thanks for your help. I would have thought more people would have recognised the old Belle Vue, as the place has been talked about a lot on here.

Hi Bodzy, I couldnt believe it when I read your reply to Codger. The name of Angela Rossi rang a bell. Surely this is the Angela Rossi who lived near me in Brookhouse Flats. The Rossi family were infamous in West Gorton. Alphonse her brother especially. They had an elder sister Doreen and a younger sister called Lily. I think there was also a younger brother called Antonio (Tony). Their mother was English and their father Italian and everyone was outside on their balconies to watch the "bobbies" taking Mr.Rossi away. He was accompanied by two other Italians wearing the green prison garb with black diamonds stitched on to strategic parts. Apparently they had been interred on Mellands fields on Mount Road, which was a prisoner of war camp. When I asked my Dad why they had these patches on the uniform he said they were there for the guards to aim their guns at to bring them down. Especially behind the kneecaps and elbows. During the war Italians were imprisoned because of Mussolini's involvement with Hitler. Angela was "tough nut" then and was always getting people to join her gang. I got on the wrong side of her one day, probably not wanting to be friends with her and we had a big fight. I was always a quiet type of girl but I wasnt going to let her get the better of me, so it was a real humdinger of a fight. We ended up with some children egging us on and my Mum came running down three flights of stairs to split us up. I think that was my first and last fight ever. But she never came near me again. I often wonder what happened to them all as Angela and Alphonse were always lightfingered as youngsters. marie. Marie you Got the right Angie Rossi

Don't forget the original Northern Sporting Club on Rochdale Road Harpurhey...opened by Bill Benny and Jack McCall.[not Dougie Flood]....Bernard Manning was the first compere he only sang then....no comedy...then Tony Hume was resident.....Jackie Carlton was a regular..also the act that mimed to 'Rawhide' was Jimmy Gordon not Johnny ''Goon'' Tweed...I lived in Harpurhey and was always there

Hi June,
Bodzy's answer would be nearer to the mark if (as you say) Whithy Grove comes to mind...
There was, of course The Astoria on Plymouth Grove which was a well known Irish Club in the 1960's (and possibly beyond) with popular and local groups such as Freddie & The Dreamers, The Donnegal Four, Lee Paul, The Renegades, Wayne Gordon, Danny & The Dominators and The Talismen 'doing the rounds'
The club later became The Carousel then the International2. It was there (Astoria) that the Gallagher Brother's Mother & Father (Peggy-Thomas) first met.

Hi Guys.....I do remember Lord Berty Topham and his valet (mellors) wrestling at the Alhambra sporting club....I have a foto of myself and a mate with a parrot at the Levenshulme sporting club..A lady was asking about Tony Marsden at the Pomona..that was always a good night with Renee Rhythym...Tony opened a club in Denton later on..I bought an EP and he sang some really poignant songs--I still have the EP....maybe Bodzy also remembers old mates of mine,,Nobby Carr,,Pete Maclaine,,Ian Ravin..(all still going)...My favorite pub was the Fallowfield especially upstairs on sat nites..Its nice to see the Kingsway pub is still going but then Holts and Sam Smiths pubs should all do well because of the cheap good beer... In the old days I liked the York club also the Petite Trianon and Trianon clubs......No wonder Sinclaires does well..A Sam smiths pub downtown at cheap prices..............................Ian..vancouver

Bunny Lewis, Foo Foo? Soon there will be none of the old crowd, I suppose that's the downside of this end of life. What brilliant entertainers though. Can anyone remember the name of the drag act that used to play all the weird home made instruments? Used to wear an evening gown and looked quite sophisticated until the brass bedstead came out with a euphonium mouth piece and she would play something like Trumpets Voluntary, wow what a pair of lungs!

Hi Mauger, Used to go in Tiffany's when it was called the Plaza in the late 50's and early 60's.....I did go in when it changed to Tiffany's and became all tropical but it wasnt the same!!! They also had sessions on a Saturday afternoon but it was much more exciting in the evenings......sadly, I had to be back home before 10pm midweek, just as everyone was arriving, otherwise my dad was waiting for me on the doorstep with his arms folded. I was late one night and saw him at the door, so I nipped around the back, ran up to bed and got into bed with my clothes on....hoping he wouldnt notice......HE DID!!! Nothing got past my dad!!! The next morning came the sarcastic comments....... Hi Folks! Does Anyone remember Tiffanys on Oxford road.with the resident group The nocturnes Lynn paul sang with them?If you took a girl in there you odds on!

I remeber the chez joey your right it was a cosy place, but my main memory was ... the first time I had encountered red flock wallpaper. I thought it was so POSH. and was it true ... the rumour went around that Bill Benny , a big guy , met.him a few times , his hobby was knitting? ? did he die in bed in a delicate situation with a lady??? or has my memory got it wrong and what happened to Tony Hulme , great voice I agree.
