Well Mavis funny you should mention those two clubs co I worked in both of them as well Firstly, the Northern Sporting Club , Sorry I'm afraid its been gone a long time now I worked for Jack McCall there when Jackie Carlton was compere, It was pulled down for redevolopment and Jack McCall took the Press Club untill he died a few years ago , I also worked for Bernard Manning at the Embassy Club (which is still going) but now run by his son young Bernard, plus family of course , i also worked for Bernard at the Palladium Club, another club Bernard had in between Oldam Rd and Rochdale Rd Miles Platting...As for Quaffers no I never worked there , I was in there quite a number of times thought but that had to go for redevelopment too..... any more you can remember, you sound like you knew your clubs maybe our paths crossed , maybe I even served you at one point but we'll never know , I love to chat about those days, cos they were so full of fun and enjoyment , some times i never saw my Dad for weeks on end but my Mum was always there with a clean shirt for me to go out or go to work in God Bless Her

But it wasn't that either!!!!!

Mavis, if it was a cabaret club and not a country club my first reaction would have been the "Offerton Palace Theatre Club which is a little drive through Stockport then up the hill going out to Bredbury or Romiley, that was another club of Sid Elgars that I worked in on occasions , We used to do a BBC show from there ,if I remember right We used to do the show Thursday and it went out on BBC on a Monday Night and it was called "Clubnight ", Just for that show the compere was changed ,the regular one Kevin Kent was replaced by Donald Peers (do you remember " In a shady nook ,by a babbling brook") I sometimes worked as a barman or waiter or I was somtimes a customer but always got my face on Telly, I even had my 21st birthday party there ,with loads of the staff from the Southern ps i also think i saw Gene Vincent but not sure , I did see him in the film "the girl cant help it "with him Fats Domino and Little Richard in you know that era was so good its a shame that we got old and sensible, and started doing responsible things and forgetting that living was for then Ack well no good crying now

Mavis I think the one with the glove on one hand was Shane Fenton , Gene Vincent's band was called the Bluecaps cos they all wore blue caps ( must have been closet CITY suporters )but I cant think of Lee Lawrence or what he sang , did you see him at the Southern or somewhere else ?? , Mavis What do you mean "before my time " i'm older than God" and Hey I remember Alma Cogan there so i'm showing my age as well

well I think the club in stockport could have been the Empress club and the country club at stockport was Bredbury hall. Gene Vincent did wear a glove an all black leather and had a lame leg a friend was only just talking about him last wednesday about when he appeared at the JJ club on stanley grove.

Hi Johnny, We used to go to the Man Fang every Saturday after visiting the MSG Club in New Millgate. I, too, never ordered the Chinese food - too scared because of the rumours - I always ordered omelette and chips - not exactly the thing to order in a Chinese. I later acquired a taste for exotic foods and still have to this day.

Hi Linda...
The JJ club..??.... did that become Bobby's Club around 1970/71......
...and even though it wasn't a Cabaret Club - anyone remember The Silver Moon (off Dantzic Street), used to owned by Ted Barry... he then sold it to Pete Farrel around 1972

Hi June..
Patty's along with 'Kellys' was another club and just around the corner from the Silver Moon ... Pete Farrel used to work the markets as well. His Wife, Sheila used to work the bar.
The place where I used to get my suits and shirts in the 70's & 80's (Rosenfields) was at the entrance to the alleyway leading to the club... In fact... if you walk alongside the metrolink at Shudehill towards Dantzic street.. and if you look to your left you will STILL see that alleyway - abeit one side of it.

well you lot have made my night all the clubs and the same people we all knew I wonder if any of us actually has a drink together. If you go to Monroes on piccadilly on a Weds 4 till 8pm you will catch a lot of the old crowd there Free and easy it is and all the old time singers get up and do a turn. Linda

Hi Belinda, Shane Fenton WAS Alvin Stardust and he lived with Liza Goddard in Muswell Hill when I lived there and I would often see them queueing up at my green-grocery store on a Saturday for their vegetables. Liza now lives in the country with her new partner and loves the country quiet life. Hey Bodzy,Was Shane fenton Alvin stardust? He's the only one I remember wearing a leather glove.
