ahhh yes... The Pomona... only went in there when the family was visiting. Correct me if i'm wrong but I seem to recall that at the back of the Pub there were some steps that led down to the tow-path (when the canal was there).... I know there were some from Waterhouse Street on the other side.
The 'Subby' had a pretty good darts team for quite a while.. pool team wasn't all that good though...lol.
and talking of Hengist Street... where it meets Far Lane.. there used to be an old gas lamp (converted) with the ladder rests still attached... used to climb the stone wall and swing on 'em... ahhh memories.

Hi Norma & Tigger ,I know the pub and Friendship Ave very well also Sandown St off Vine Street, I used to go to Varna St School on a Tuesday and Thursday for woodwork and metal work lessons I remember making my first poker at metalwork dead proud I was as well when i took it home to show everyone,it didnt last long though,it got bent when i tried changing a tyre with it Oh well ....hey tigger Ive swung on that old gas lamp myself , i used to knock about with a fella that lived in the last street cant think of the name of it , but it was the one that was unadopted, dead rough ,no tarmac or concrete on the road he lived at the top house on the left as the road went round to the blacksmiths on Hyde Road, Alan Poole was his name used to get called "Puddle" and the Suburban was the only pub I ever got barred from in my life for fighting and the landlord was a mate of my dads , Johnny King the ex boxer , so glad he only barred me and never hit me cos I 'd be dead now ,he was a hard man

Bodzy - have to reply as you may well be an old mate of my brother as his mate was Alan (Puddle) Poole who lived near Brookfield church. Also which school did you go to I remember St James lads coming to our school for woodwork & metal work with I think it was Mr Judd & Mr Jordan

Norma ,its Me again I went to St james School i left in 1956 after having about 3 pints in the Sportsman Inn on Hengist St , I was feeling a little drunk when I went back for my school leavers certificate " oh if I could get drunk on 3 pints nowadays I save some money " and you got the right names as well for the teachers ,one was a small fussy haired on and the other was a bit bald but taller , the only lad I think i remember from around Frienship Ave that knocked about with us and puddle was Keith Kershaw , who joined the Royal Navy with another local lad , is either of them your brother ??

Bodzy, I think you are around same age as my brothers Alan & David Darbyshire. Bit before my time I went to Varna 1958-1963. Think Keith Kershaw lived a couple of streets away from me. The other lad may have been Eric Dagleish (I knew their sisters). I think they used to go in a Cafe on Reddish Lane near the Pomona.

ahhhhh....memories all.. Remember when the Silver Moon on Dantzic Place (off Dantizc Street) was mentioned, well... I remember when Pete Farrel (and his missus) took over, they created/turned it into a sort of disco (cool in them days a'la Kelly's and Patsy's). Anyone remember when the DJ played 'lovey dovey' time at 1am for about 15 minutes to allow the fellahs to shuffle onto the dancefloor with (or sometimes for ) their girlfriends. And used to finish with 'These things will keep me loving you' (Velvelettes)... awwwww... Wondered if anyone who met on the dancefloor - ANY dancefloor - are still together...

Hi June....
Certainly do. Mr Pearson's (Foo Foo) first club - certainly before The Celebrity (The Palace). Frank used to pop in to the Silver Moon on a Sunday night to see what 'the rough lot' were up to (I reckoned so he could get a free 'chicken n chips in the basket').
The Bossanova rings a bell... but never went there.

Tigger ,the Bossanova was on the corner of Todd Street and Millgate right next to Victoria Station up one flight of stairs I forgot who had it first but an old gambling mate of mine bought it after a big win , the name everybody knew him by was Chick They used to call him the Black Prince, and just outside was a Greek flower - seller who had a barrow which him and his girl friend used to work untill he won about £15,000 on the pools then h went into he cafe business , he now runs the smallest pub in Manchester on Portland Street "the Circus Tavern " George the Greek

hello Norma Our first home when we got married(1966) was in Friendship Avenue, a two up, two down, but it was OURS! even after all these years I can remember the thrill of opening the front door of our first home as a couple!. Sold it eventually about 1970.. moved back to Wales (work related) Different expectations for newly weds these days,

Hiya Bodzy..
Cheers for the info... still don't remember the club though I DO recollect the name 'Chick'.
June.. further info on the Picador/Patty's/Kelly's...
The Picador was on Hanover Street in between Dantzic and Shudehill. Patty's and Kelly's were one of the same (but at different times) and was situated on Amber Street with ran from Hanover Street to Bradshaw Street.

Hi June, I've got a photograph of me at one of those clubs taken in 1964 and if I can get it on here, I'll let you have a peep. They had a photographer with a monkey and he made you pose with it in your arms. The monkey ended up with its hand down the top of my dress......obviously been trained by the photographer. Does anyone remember the Ponderosa club behind the express just off oldham rd an a bit further up behind Grannellis the regency club ??
