Hi June, I've got a photograph of me at one of those clubs taken in 1964 and if I can get it on here, I'll let you have a peep. They had a photographer with a monkey and he made you pose with it in your arms. The monkey ended up with its hand down the top of my dress......obviously been trained by the photographer. Does anyone remember the Ponderosa club behind the express just off oldham rd an a bit further up behind Grannellis the regency club ?? look forward to seeing it lisa ,which club was it taken in

Hi June, I think it was the Regency Club. I'm not very good at remembering names of Clubs. I may have written it on the back of the photo.....I'll have a look for it today and put it in PhotoBucket.

Hi June....
That being the case then... I have been there (Ponderosa) a few times.. Narrow stairs leading to a long narrow(ish) club (front widow used to overlook New Cross/Oldham Road). From the top of the stairs - Bar and seating area to the right... dancefloor and stage etc to the left.. if my memory serves me well... it WAS over 30 years ago...

This thread brought back many memories of what I call town people. It was a community I loved.Several generations of my family had trodden the path before me.Had some fab times in these pubs and clubs.Didnt really start until 70's but know many of the characters mentioned. Some others I remember were Kennedys who had pet shop in Tib St.Doormen -Frank Platt.Charlie Pearson,Sommervilles.Johnny Toto,Brian Dunn and co and many more. Many who used the pubs around Oldham st were steel erectors,my dad being one of them.Met up with him sometimes in Ag club in Tib St.Loved pubs in that area.So many characters mainly from all the inner city areas.Seemed to be plenty of money about in those days.It also felt that little bit 'dangerous'to me.Very excited when I could get in the LITTLE gEORGE IN THE AFTERNOONS AFTER CLOSING.3 KNOCKS ON THE WINDOW AND ALL THAT.

The clubs I remember best, obviously the Southern where Eddie Jones, Noel Dwyer and Pete Ogden kept the crowd in place, best cabaret to me was Billy Fury followed by Sounds Incorporated who backed many bands in the sixties. Domino was okay, Mannings a good laugh and the Northern a bit strict for my liking. In Manchester town anyone recall the John Peel club near the Silver Moon off Cannon Street. Salami's and the Penny Farthing for an afternoon, or maybe the Golden Gate, Kellys with Lol Brotherton on the door and the Picador for the cabaret or disco. For music I remember the Cavern, Forty Thieves, Heaven and Hell and of course the Twisted Wheel. What was the club near the dogs home,Harpurhey, anyone remember? or the Clan Bar around from the Paramount before Foo Foo got hold of it...oh! and the Picador facing snacktime and the Haunch of Venison.

Yes Tigger, that was the place described to a T. June, Picador was the one on the corner that changed to Roadhouse I think, Bus Stop was right where bus stop still is and I think turned into a cafe of some sort. The things we did for a drink hey! What about the one on Tib st that just was called by its initials, up some stairs? Stage and Radio off Dale St and the Afrique down near Central Station...there are more in the purple haze of my mind.

Hi Copdger Well You remember a few old mates of mine at the Southern Sporting Club ........ Eddie Jones was one of the lads we knocked about with from just before leaving school, one of our mates was a steeplejack who fell from a chimney and Eddie married his wife Amy we, drank together ,fought together , and by the sounds of that loved together , ive still got a few photos of Jones'ie and us lot dont get me wrong he was probably one of the hardest men to come out of Gorton in them days Still see him from time to time ,up to just recent he was working the door at the new pub on Debdale "the Bandstand" Still is an old mate ,, then Big Pete Ogden a mountain of a man but a gentle giant when he had to be , started on the coal rounds ,used to carry a coal-sack full with one hand , met him years later we both worked for the same security firm now he is living in an old peoples home in Wthenshawe Road ,his health is not good but if you remember Pete ( and who wouldnt ) you might remember Georgie Taylor his No 1 sidekick who not only worked the doors with but used to wrestle in the ring with him George wrestled under the name of Monty Brition ... two smashing fellas I'm proud to have as old mates and there all still in the land of the living bodzy

TAKIS (and sometimes 'Tiffanys'). The most memorable thing about the Long Bar was just outside there were a set of downstairs public toilets. Out side the 'gents' stood (on a very regular basis) a 'Lady of pleasure' called..... 'Zipper Lil' (I jest ye not folks) - this was the name given to her by the local bobbies... and it stuck. Dont know if she was 'popular' - but she sure was 'famous'

The Long Bar was known far and wide as the Gaumont Long Bar, and it was certainly pretty big. Rumour had it it was the longest bar in the UK ... yeah right.
Don't remember Zipper Lil though Tig, mind you we were still using buttons back then ...

Hi June, thanks for recalling the A&G, also recall the Blackbird Cafe at the back of Littlewoods for a crafty drink on a Sunday afternoon. Bodzy....met with Eddie at a lad called Pete Maunsell's sixtieth birthday bash about 3 years ago, still scary no matter what, i recall the death of the steeplejack but thought wife was called Amy? I may be wrong. Pete Ogden was the gentle giant and I had heard he was ill, used to see him in the Imperial where many of the acts used to come in for a pint of Wilsons during the interval at the Southern. Great pub in its heyday, I think the landlord went from there to the Mitchell in Beswick, funny how some pubs are never the same when certain landlords/landladies leave them.

Hi Bodzy, great memories, Pete Maunsell was a well known footballer who lived on Green St which later became Dearoak Street I think. Another old Gorton Lad who had the Travs before a heart attack took him a couple of years ago was Alan Plimmer, best unpaid voice in Gorton. You are right about Angela Rossi too, that stirred my memory as I had forgotten that fact. I remember taking back a truck full of empty Guinness bottles one Sunday night to the Imp and getting £1.10 s back, the future father in law bought a carry-out every time he went out but would never return the mt's. Yes 120 bottles, I got the 10s so bought chips and curry next door from Fongs, the fastest chippy emptier in the world.

Hi Bodzy, I couldnt believe it when I read your reply to Codger. The name of Angela Rossi rang a bell. Surely this is the Angela Rossi who lived near me in Brookhouse Flats. The Rossi family were infamous in West Gorton. Alphonse her brother especially. They had an elder sister Doreen and a younger sister called Lily. I think there was also a younger brother called Antonio (Tony). Their mother was English and their father Italian and everyone was outside on their balconies to watch the "bobbies" taking Mr.Rossi away. He was accompanied by two other Italians wearing the green prison garb with black diamonds stitched on to strategic parts. Apparently they had been interred on Mellands fields on Mount Road, which was a prisoner of war camp. When I asked my Dad why they had these patches on the uniform he said they were there for the guards to aim their guns at to bring them down. Especially behind the kneecaps and elbows. During the war Italians were imprisoned because of Mussolini's involvement with Hitler.
Angela was "tough nut" then and was always getting people to join her gang. I got on the wrong side of her one day, probably not wanting to be friends with her and we had a big fight. I was always a quiet type of girl but I wasnt going to let her get the better of me, so it was a real humdinger of a fight. We ended up with some children egging us on and my Mum came running down three flights of stairs to split us up. I think that was my first and last fight ever. But she never came near me again. I often wonder what happened to them all as Angela and Alphonse were always lightfingered as youngsters.
marie.
