Mine was the Plough on Hyde Rd. Back in the 50s the Landlord would'nt sell crisps etc. Said it made his ale go flat from the airborne fat. Must say he kept a good pint though.

Hi Babs,
If you click on pubs on the homepage, it will take you to the pub index, but scroll up the way from the index instead of down and there you will see two photos of the Plough. The pub is still there at the corner of Hyde Rd and Wellington St near Gorton Market. Shut that door...!!
Cheers, Rob, eh......., I mean Larry..!

My favourite watering holes were 'The Sun in September' and 'The Victoria', both on Burnage Lane, Burnage. Is there anyone from Burnage out there?

Although the Suburban was just round the corner from where I lived, our favourite local pubs were the Plough and the Nelson. Don't recall Jack(?) banning crisps, but he did keep a good pint of Robbies. It was only a small vault, but there were bones, cards and darts (on a Manchester "log-end" board).
I only remember dominoes and cards being played in the Nelson, where Jack Irwin was the landlord.
Our Friday night pub was always the Royal George, behind Stevie Square in town, and while our weekend hostelries were spread around the Peak District, we usually finished up in the Bull in Hayfield on a Sunday night. Cass

Hi Tommy, I've been in NZ for 46 years so the "log-end" is a distant memory for me too. However I have been a ManMates member for a fair while, but don't do much chatting, although I visit the site every day and nosey around all the traps.
As for football, was a City supporter for years (starting when, and probably because, Frank Swift was the keeper), but since coming to NZ I've got a bit ambidextrous ... and support ManU quite strongly ... wouldn't do to mention it near Eastlands though.
I played - or tried to play - football and cricket at school (St Gregs), was never much cop, but started playing again when I came here. Retired from active soccer last year when I was 70, although the after-match beer was the main attraction. Still is. Regards, Cass

Hi Cass, Great to see someone from NZ on site. Any chance of getting your photo put on ? It would be great to see what you look like. Glad to see also that you keep up-to-date with our postings. Would be nice to have a chat later. Take care.

Hi Cass, Wow, you mentioned the Bull in Hayfield. Also used to drive up there at the weekends. It was great to get out of Manchester and breathe in fresh air. The drinks tasted nicer up there, could have been the country air that did it.

My favourite watering holes were: - The Star Inn in Hulme. The Quadrant in GorseHill Stretford. Throstles Nest on Seymour Grove, Old Trafford. The Seymour in Chorlton. The North West Ho! in Hulme (floating ship/club). Stirs any memories in anyone? More recently, when I lived in Blackley for two years, it was the Charlestown pub on Charlestown Road - very nice and lovely staff.

Thanks for your reply regarding the North Westward Ho! We are living just outside the Selby area (we are lucky enough to have both the countryside and a market town on our doorstep). Think we may have seen the last of summer today - it was hot and sunny all day but now we're having some much needed rain. I love living here by the way but miss Manchester from time to time. When last we lived there we spent two years in Blackley (near Moston). All our family members are dotted about in Manchester areas - Sale - Urmston - Blackley - Longsight - Middleton (to name but a few)! Whereabouts in Manchester do you live?

Hi Lisa, haven't been ignoring you, but I've been a bit thick in getting around the site (have just learnt to click on the general subject, and then on whatever title is of interest). I've never belonged to any chat forums, so I stand in awe of all you experts who use the system like it was a telephone.
Does anyone remember the Jock pub in Market Street? About half-way down on the left. I'm pretty sure they sold Scottish beer, and kept Scottish licensing hours. Don't ask me how or why.
My favourite pubs were the "singing" pubs, with usually a big room, a bit of music and "turns" on the mike. I went in the Gorton Brook a few times, and remember a lad called, I think, Roy Gibson, who was a great pub singer. Can't remember what he sang, but it was probably Frankie Laine stuff. Cass

Casso, My younger brother took me in Jocks once - my bro worked in the Safeways store at the time - remember that? Anyway, it was definitely a "scottish" pub and a good time was had by all. Last time I walked down market street (3 years ago) I barely recognised it from the market street I knew (in the 80's) I knew loads of market traders too in the 80's - I know the changes are for the better but market street used to have CHARACTER! Oh, sorry, Casso, hello and welcome to the manmates site.

Hi Babs, How romantic does that sound ".....We used to sit near the canal.....". The Rochdale canal always stank. I bet you saw my dad in there. In those days he used to go in the vault where women wernt allowed. Women were only allowed in the Snug. My dad often walked to the Bay Horse in the summer. Wasnt that the long walk down the hill to the Bay Horse. Was that the one?

BABS, Didnt we walk long distances in those days? The Bay Horse is miles away. I remember as a child walking to Daisy Nook for the fair and at one time I even walked from town to home (with my shoes in my hands) because I'd missed the last bus. No wonder we were thin........
