The first pub I went in was at an office party at the Gateway (end of Kingsway)..I was 15 and they laced my drinks..I was so drunk I distinctly remember nearly falling into the mersey across the way..In the 60,s I would drink at the Snipe (Audenshaw) with my mates and also the Parkside--Fallowfield............I also remember (1957) a regular who had died was taken in his coffin to The Welcome (Fallowfield) where his friends could offer condolences....Talking of the Bay Horse...The one in Longsight looks like a den of inequity inside--talk about people watching..I was in there in March......A great pub is the Queens Head (Turners Vaults) in Underbank--Stockport absolutely unspoilt since 18th century...and good cheap Sam Smiths ales....Winters is across the street (Holts) good cheap ale too.........Cheers ...Ian..vancouver..

My watering holes were all round the Stretford and Old Trafford areas so I doubt anyone on here would know them but, here goes! My first watering hole was Stretford British Legion - I used to love going there on a Saturday night with my Mum and Dad. We'd play Bingo part way through the night and there'd always be sandwiches laid on just before last orders. Marvellous times! There was old fashioned ball-room dancing and, occasionally the "turn" would sing modern stuff so we'd disco dance!! My other favourites (in no particular order) were the Quadrant, Throstles Nest, The Seymour, The Bass Drum, The Star Inn (Hulme), The Manchester Regiment, The North Westward Ho and The Shrewsbury. One night I'd gone for a girl's night out whilst hubby was on a weekend away with the Territorial Army. As I got out of the taxi to walk a short distance to my house, I felt as though someone was following me so I rummaged around in my handbag and got out my spray perfume. I pelted home and quickly opened then closed our front door. I then went to put the "spray" perfume back in my bag only to find it was a roll-on deodrant! Fat lot of good that would have done me! LOL

I remember Bakers Vaults in Stockport up in the area of where the market was held, we used to call it the Hole in the Wall, bare wooden floor and small barrels instead of tables. In Old Trafford/ Stretford area was the Luxor Club and the Shrewsbury on Shakespear St. Trouble is there were so many decent pubs in Manchester it is hard to say which would be an all time favourite.

Just thought of another favourite of mine and wonder if it's still there? The Golden Garter in Wythenshawe. I remember seeing some famous acts there but one that stands out more than any of the others was Bob Monkhouse - he was far funnier (and ruder) than he ever was on t.v.
Hubby rang me about 3pm - he missed the ferry to Germany last night due to a mix-up over timetables. Managed to get a ferry to Holland instead and is driving through Germany now on his way to Hungary.

Hi Johnny, Apparently its an American system that Alan uses for Manmates and censors words like D I C K E N S and even S P O O N (?) because anything that resembles parts of our anatomy is censored. The way to get around it is to put a space between each letter. I know it sounds crazy but you can look up the words banned in the main profile.

I'll not sleep now until I remember all of it! If that is the one your thinking of. There was another one that Dave Allen told - about an elephant and a mouse ...... it'll come to me, eventually! LOL I went into labour just as the soap "Neighbours" was about to start and I was most put out. Bloke in the lodge at St.Mary's hospital was watching it as we arrived and, had it not been for the pains, I would have asked what happened. Odd what goes through your mind at such times eh?

I'm new around here, but maybe it says something about my interests that the first thread I post in is about pubs!!!
My first regular watering hole was the Blue Bell on Barlow Road in Leve, it was run by a guy called Dave Starling/Sterling I'd have been about 16 or 17 then.
Other regulars were The Bridge on Clayton Lane when Jimmy Fox ran it. Then there was the Gransmoor on Ashton Old Road. I worked in there for about six months back in 1986ish for Dave Gardener. I went with Dave when he used to manage the Gorton Brook a year or so later.
These days my missus and I drink in the Pig on The wall in Droylsden. That and the now demolished Sundial have been my regulars for the last nearly 18years.

Hi Davec, Although I moved away from Manchester with my parents when I was 7, we used to go back home 2/3 times a year, sometimes more. When I was a lot older we used to go drinking in 'The c*ck O' the North' Wythenshawe, also 'The Osbourne', Collyhurst..do you know that one? A great aunt used to live across the road from the 'Sundial' which we sometimes frequented. In fact we used to go to so many different pubs all over Manchester that I can't remember them all...We used to go with different members of the family who still lived up there...sadly a lot of them are no longer with us. Some of my teenage years where spent in the Suburban Cross Street Gorton, The only pub ever to get barred from in my life , the landlord was my dads mate Johnny King , one of Manchester's most famous boxers. I also drank in the Lord Nelson when Jack had it and his wife ran off with the taxi driver , the Vale Cottage was another with the sawdust on the floor in the big room ,the Railway on Chapman Street where my dad worked and also ran was another in fact you name it i've drank in it

Hi Badzy, It sounds like you certainly visited a lot of pubs - just like Babs. The names sound familiar to me as my dad used to go regularly to the pub after work. He worked at the English Steel in Clayton Lane and visited the pubs there. He also mentioned the Crabtree where he played dominoes and darts. Also the one right down the hill that you mentioned. It was a bit of a walk but in the Summer it was full of atmosphere. Did you ever go in the Greens Arms on Ashton New Road? I lived at the back of there in Iredine Street.

Casso the name of the Scots pub on Market Street was the Sportsman ,, half way down on the right hand side, down the steps and into the bar it was owned by Scottish and Newcastle breweries and opposite a lot of years ago was Yates Wine Lodge on Market Street or The Blob Shop as locals called it cos the hot toddies were made of Aussie white wine sugar and hot water and called Blobs
