There there Olly, we were on about the Cross Street one, opposite Gore Street. Must admit I don't remember much about the "big" Sivs on Hyde Road, opposite the Town Hall, although wasn't the counter on the right there too?

Our first house when we married was in Friendship Avenue, near reddish bridge, the pub on the corner was the Friendship inn,Hyde road, also the wagon & horses a bit further down towards cross street, both great places then. Also the Fir tree way up reddish lane, great times and great memories, are these places still going? (It was the late 60's we lived there)

Hi all,
My favourite watering holes have got the be "The Lamb" at Eccles Cross ( a Holt's House) where under the expert eye of Barry the landlord you can procure probably the finest pint in Lancashire. When I last inbided there a pint of Mild cost a mere 0.80p. A close second though has got to be Cloudys in Patricroft. Now that really is a serious drinking man's pub. Their Mild was on a par with Guiness and cheap too. It was next door to the Black Boy( another good pub). I remember in Cloudys one of the most embarassing moments ever. At the time I used to lodge with my Aunt Gertrude on Ellesmere Street (Used to be the longest Mill street in Lancashire). At about ten 0' clock( I was just enjoying the chat and my last pint) when in walked my aged Aunt into the men's room ( she was only about 4' 8"). Came straight over to me and said "Are you coming for your supper or what?" I could have crawled under the table. You should have heard the lads."Fancy keeping your Gertrude waiting etc etc !" Boy! and they never let me forget it either. Every time I went in after that they used to ask "have you got a pass out from Aunt Gertrude Brian!" Salt of the earth she was , God Bless her!

Morning Lisa, My Aunt Gertrude was a lovely old woman and at 86 I once asked her what she was doing with such a big shopping basket. She replied, bless her "I'm going to Eccles market and do some shopping for my neighbours!" I replied "Why are you doing it?" She said "Someone's got to look after these old people. I couldn't believe it. At her age someone should have been looking after her. When I told her she ought to contact Social Services you should have seen the look of contempt on her face. She just said "Oh! them. They're useless.

Hi all, my first watering hole(aged 15) was the Bridge on pin mill brow. A little old lady had it (name i can't remember) she used to let me and my mates in so long as we didn't cause trouble which we never did. I remember being in there one evening being jack the lad after a load of ale(4 pints) and looking over the bar and spotting my dad who had just finished work, i soon sobered up. After a few months we ventured to the old house at home- the seven stars -the general birch and the clockface(old not new.) Happy days.

The Shrewsbury on Shakespear St Old Trafford. I think I got it the right way round. The pub on't street behind Henrietta St. anyway. On my 18th birthday my mates poured everything that came in a bottle down my neck, just before passing out I remember the awful smell of gin. I have never touched it since and still can't stand the smell of it.

Bit late with this but have only just joined the site - my sister in law Mag lived in Heald Grove, off Claremont Road. One weekend we visited her and spent Saturday night in the Lord Lion - a bit intimidating for a newly married teenage couple! A rough looking bloke, sitting with his mates in the corner, kept looking at me. "Who is it?" I asked Mag. "Oh don't worry," she said. "That's me husband George." Another be careful how you go but interesting pub was in Ancoats. I think it was called The Fireman's or something like that and it sold draught cider in barrels labelled 'sweet' and ' rough'. There was a 'Wanted for Murder' notice on the wall of the vault. Through the hatch I spotted a shotgun under the bar. We had a couple, kept quiet, and got out. Happy days!

BABS, Didnt we walk long distances in those days? The Bay Horse is miles away. I remember as a child walking to Daisy Nook for the fair and at one time I even walked from town to home (with my shoes in my hands) because I'd missed the last bus. No wonder we were thin........
Because I am brand new to this fabulous site, my comments are years out of date. I was born on Edge lane Droylsden, so I am very familiar with the Bay horse, Crabtree, etc.
Probably my favourite stomping ground in the 60s was Ashton Palace, It was like a second home to me and my mates. We managed to miss the last bus most nights, so it was a regular thing to walk home to Droylsden from there.
