I was chatting to a very elderly neighbour today and somehow we got onto the subject of tv, then and now. he mentioned the original quatermass and the pit series, who was in it? I can remember seeing it, very scary at the time! also a series called man in a suitcase? any one else recall these shows?were they really better entertainment then or were we more easily pleased in those days? :

Hi Taffydee, I remember the Quatermass program that was on as a series on a Sunday evening. My parents had a caravan in Carnforth and we used to come back in time to watch the program on a Sunday night. The film was on tv recently and I watched it rather bemused at the amateurism of the film but I remember it as a scary program when I was an eleven year old. I also remember Man in a Suitcase too but cant remember which actors were in it.

Hi Dotty, Yes, you are quite right in that today's tv and films dont leave much to the imagination. Remember the radio plays and thingy Barton? I would listen with my hand in my mouth and the whole family would gather around the set each week. Quatermass on tv in the 50's was the first frightening thing I watched with my parents and we looked forward to it each week. It was quite tame really when compared to today. The film The Quatermass Experiment was on tv recently here and I watched it eagerly in the hope of recapturing that old magic but sadly I've been spoiled by today's realistic and over-realistic tv and films. In films of yesteryear you never saw sex on tv. French kissing was a 'no-no' and nudity never seen on the screen. Maybe that's where we've gone wrong today. We knew then that it went on, but it stayed in our imagination not on the screen - now its spelt out for us in all its technicolour, gut-wrenching, vomit-inducing. corrupting, vainglorious medium.

Hi Belinda, Yes I do remember Jimmy Clitheroe and, like you, I would be glued to the radio - I think most of us were in those days because there wasnt anything else. I also remember Workers Playtime at lunchtime with Wilfred Pickles and Mabel. I used to come home from school at lunchtime, get a pie from Wolstenhomes on Ashton New Road, make myself a pot of tea and sit and listen to the program. Does anyone else remember it? The program was recorded in different factories each week and they sometimes interviewed the workers.

I think that one of the funniest shows on the radio was Lookin At Life Al read it was great. What I could never understand was how a ventriloquist could make money on the radio ( Archie Adrews).

Hi Olly, As a kid I thought Frank Randle was the funniest bloke I'd ever seen, he developed belching into a fine art. I seem to recall though that his private life was a bit messy, which could probably apply to most of us ... Cass

Hey Lisa Your not the only one thats that old , I remember all them shows (give him the money Mable) and of course the Billy Cotton Band Show (Wakey Wakey) Itmar with Tommy Handley, The BBC Home service, ( only Mum and Dad was allowed to change the channel over when that was on ) But later on when I became a big boy the best of the best was undoubtably ...The Goon Show ( the original) "I'm the famous Eccles".....God doesen't time fly

Hi Bodzy, I was reared and sspoon-fed The Goons by my two brothers who chuckled away every time it was on. Being so much younger than them (the baby of the family) I could never understand why they rolled on the floor laughing - now I can !!! If I dared to open my mouth I would get a knuckle punch from my brother when the program was on. I was forced to sit and listen to it while I watched them howling with laughter. Cruel or what?

Can you remember Radio Luxembourge? the only station to get the latest records , I spent hours listening to My grandfathers huge radio, the size of a modern washing machine, but it could pick up stations across the world on a good night! I was about 10 then but good memories.
