Thanks Bill, I'll keep an eye out for that event....I fancy digging out my floral frock and sussies and putting metal curlers in my hair with a turban. I'm sure I've got some bright red lipstick somewhere (Floozie's lipstick, as my mum called it). Just back on Manmates after an absence of a couple of years. We had a chip shop in Ashton and amongst our customers were Bill Tarmey - wonderful, down to earth man; Sean Wilson - what a prat (he once refused to give a small child his autograph) and Henry c*ckburn (apparently one of the best Centre Halfs were never played for England). We also had quite a few footballers from City, United, Oldham etc but not being a football supporter I can't remember who they were. Eric Cantona was once in a restaurant in Manchester and he was so pleasant with his mithering fans who wanted to have photos etc taken with him, his meal must have been cold by the time they had finished with him. I also once met Pat Pheonix - she also had time for her fans. Can't think of any more at the moment.

Hi AnneB, Welcome back to Manmates. I remember Sutton's croft and Bonfire Night so well. Do you remember the year someone wheeled a piano onto the croft and we all sat around on old chairs and sofas singing songs? I used to call at most of the bonfires the next morning on my way to school and loved kicking the ashes to see if they were still smouldering underneath. I always got a ticking off when I got home because my school shoes were ruined and my mum had to take me to Clarks Shoe Shop near Grey Mare Lane for new ones. Do you ever remember taking pop bottles from Wilson's back yard and taking them round to his shop for refunds? Mr. Wilson cottoned onto what we were doing and wasnt very pleased!!! Great to hear your stories Anne.

HAVE ANY OF YOU MET ANYONE FAMOUS? IF SO WHO? I HAVE MET LOTS OF FAMOUS OR WHAT I GUESS WE CALL FAMOUS PEOPLE DURING MY WORKING LIFE. I USED TO BE A HOTEL RECEPTIONIST AND WE GOT ALL THE GROUPS OF THE DAY STAYING IN THE HOTEL, WHILST THEY WERE DOING THEIR LIVE SHOWS HERE IN THE EVENINGS.. THE BEATLES I GOT TO KNOW, MET THE WALKER BROTHERS, KINKS, TROGGS, CLIFF RICHARD ETC..ALSO MET LOTS OF GOLFERS WHEN I USED TO DO RECEPTION WORK AT 'ST MELLION GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB ABOUT A MILE FROM WHERE I LIVE...IT WAS BUILT, OR SHOULD I SAY DESIGNED BY JACK NICHOLAS...DO YOU REMEMBER GEORGE ROPER? I MET HIM IN C&A IN MANCHESTER MANY YEARS AGO... AT THE GOLF CLUB WE HAD A LOT OF FOOTBALL PLAYERS, CRICKET PLAYERS ETC, AND ALSO CELEBRITIES WHO PLAYED GOLF WITH THE GOLF PRO'S, RONNIE CORBETT FOR ONE, SO MANY, TOO MANY TO MENTION RIGHT NOW, OR MAYBE EVEN REMEMBER....OH I DO REMEMBER BEN WARRIS? DOES ANYONE REMEMBER HIM...HE WAS A MISERABLE OLD GUY...BERNIE CLIFTON..CAN'T THINK OF THE NAME OF THIS GUY BUT HE WAS THE ONE WHO HAD THE BEAR (NOOKIE BEAR) HE WAS NOT VERY NICE EITHER....THEY WERE DOING A CHARITY GAME OF GOLF AND EVERYONE VOLUNTEERED TO COME ALONG FOR CHARITY, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO GOT REAL NASTY BECAUSE HE WANTED PAYING FOR HIS APPEARANCE, HE NEVER GOT IT BUT BOY WAS HE MAD ANOTHER ONE WHO WOULDN'T MAKE AN APPEARANCE UNLESS SHE GOT PAID WAS ANNEKA RICE, SHE WENT BACK BECAUSE SHE SAID SHE DOESN'T APPEAR ANYWHERE FOR LESS THAN TWO GRAND....GREED OR WHAT CAN'T THINK OF ANYMORE RIGHT NOW BUT THERE ARE PLENTY COME ON GUYS, HAVE YOU MET ANYONE EXCITING, LET US ALL IN ON WHO THEY ARE? LIN Hi. Lin, Like yourself and quite a few others on here, I have met a few "Celebs". After over 25 years of driving a cab in Manchester I have met very many famous people, and I always found them to be charming with only one exception. (Chris quentin, Brian Tilsley out of Coronation St, who I threw out of my cab when he came the "Do you know who I am")? I replied yes, you're the so and so who owes my mate £2000 for wiring your nightclub that you never paid him for. Quentin had opened a club in Manchester, and it folded shortly after leaving most of the contractors unpaid for work they had done. I have only ever collected 2 autographs off passengers That was David Beckam and Eric Cantona, because my grandsons are United mad. (Spit) I always found that by treating the celebs as ordinary people which of course they are, I had some fascinating conversations, and have been told the most intimate personal stories by a lot of them, which I would never have dreamed of divulging. Over the years most cabbies have seen and heard everything and we are quite a cynical bunch. They are known not to suffer fools or pompous people easily, we didn't take prisoners if somebody tried it on. I have a theory that it wasn't usually the celebs who caused the problems, but their personal staff who had to justify their jobs by being obnoxious to hotel staff and the like on behalf of their paymasters. I have many friends in the hotel trade who have told me some horror stories of tantrum throwing stars, and if by chance I have picked up the same star, they have been charm personified. I think that they have an instinct as to where and with whom they can throw their weight around.

Hi John...as far as I am concerened we are all the same, just cos ppl appear on tv through acting, singing, sports ppl etc makes them no different to us..we all have one thing in common we're going to die, even these so called stars who many think they are invincible...I have met some really nice ones who are down to earth and have not let their status go to their head....on the other hand I have met some nasty ppl as well, rude obnoxious...most of my autographs that I have got have either been thrust upon me or asked for by whoever I was working on reception with at the time. I think you are right, these ppl know who they can throw their weight about with...I certainly would have an answer for some of them. You're grandsons are very wise ;d ;d
