Hi Olly, Those stories from Ancoats were lovely.....a real re-visit to past times.....I dont remember the bugs and fleas but some of the other things rang true. We dont know we're born, do we? As my mum used to say.......

Just a point in relation to the Butler street story , last week I had reason to visit the police museum doing research ,and being intrested in the Butler street story I asked to view the records about the death of this constable ,and about the unfortunate person who was hanged for the crime only to find out this never happened ther is nothing in the police records of this crime being committed but Its a good story and looks real but every thing you read is not necessarily the truth

HI,CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF GREAT ANCOATS STREET USED TO BE CALLED JUST ANCOATS STREET IN THE PAST ? OR IS THERE AN ANCOATS STREET IVE MISSED IN THE A TO Z ? Mike if you look on the side of the Nelson Pub on the Great Ancoats Street side you will see a little street that runs parallel with Great Ancoats Street called "little Ancoats Street " it runs from Lever Street to Dean Street , there used to be a little lane down near Store street with the old gas lamps in the houses called Ancoats Lane which was the name that everybody called Great Ancoats Street years ago ,Its a bit confusing I know , so I'm gonna check it up next time I do research

Hi great Ancoats Street has always been Great Ancoats Street but years ago it used to get alsorts of names one popular name was Ancoats Lane, during WW2 an ARP exise was taking place and a senior warden was supposed to report an incident she reported in that help was needed in Ancoats Lane the emergency service could not find Ancoats Lane the reason there was no Ancoats Lane, I remember my Dad calling it Ancoats Lane

Hi Eternal Flame, Thanks for your welcome reply but I have a print out of the 1911 census and Strand St is definately located in Ancoats. Janet St shows on the 1881 census, it's strange isn't it. I had a look on the maps at central library but couldn't see them there. My mum always mentioned Jersey St dwellings so I thought Strand St would be in that area. I am also looking for Manwaring Place which was their first home but I think i am going to draw a blank on that. That was shown on the 1901 census.

You are correct Benji, Strand street Ancoats does exist. My problem finding it on the 1911 is the usall one with that site. If you put Strand street in theere search engine for Lancashire, it will not show up any of the Ancoats address's. You have to type in Strand st Lancashire and then they pop up with the ones for Ancoats adn the rest of Manchester. Very confusing and hard work. I still had no luck finding the Jannet street on there , only a liverpool address?

OK, i think i found where your STRAND STREET should have been. I found it listed on the 1895 directory with DIXON STREET next to it. It does not appear on any of my maps but found where DIXON STREET was back in the 1960'sFor Image Click link here: i41.tinypic.com/2qdsy9t.jpg

Great work Eternalflame it has given me something to work on now. From what you are saying I should type Lancashire not manchester to get better results. I must remember that! Where can I get a copy of that map? Does it actually say Strand St as highlited by the red spots? Many thanks to you and Gortonboy for your responce to my search.

Does it actually say Strand St as highlited by the red spots? The red dots show where dixon street was in Ancoats not Strand street. I could not find Strand street on any of my map, but it did show that it use to be next to the Dixon street back in 1895. I have a lot of map, but if you want one you could try Alan Godfrey Maps. They only cost about £3 a map. Waterstone also sell some too. GreaterManchester county records office also sell them and a lot cheaper. You can get an AQ size for about the same price. Printed out while you wait. It is also worth a visit as they hold alsorts of records/maps & booksCLICK 4 GODFREY CLICK 4 MANCHESTER MAPSCLICK 4 GMCRO
