Hi Bodzy, would you know by chance where Strand street was in Ancoats. It was where my grandparents lived but cannot trace it on any maps. Another street I am looking for is Janet Street Hi Benji,,just a thought,,,i had difficulty tracing exactly where a street was myself. So i returned to my census search result and looked at the preceding and proceeding address results from the one i was interested in. If you are able to do this you will get a clue as to which streets were nearby or next to janet street and strand street. I am unable to access my census account at the moment, but hope to have it up and running soon. If you supply the details of the search you have done,i will try and find out what i can. Incidentaly, there was a Jane street in Gorton, now demolished??? regards,,,Mick.

Thanks again EF (hope you don't mind the abbreviation) I had looked at the Godfrey maps but not too closely but then again I was looking in the wrong area. I will get one of those maps in due course and let you know the outcome.
Thank's also to Gortonboy. The census I got my info from was the 1881 census and I was looking at Elizabeth Leonard and her son John living at 4 Janet St.

Hi Bodzy, would you know by chance where Strand street was in Ancoats. It was where my grandparents lived but cannot trace it on any maps. Another street I am looking for is Janet Street Benji the answer to your question is yes i do know where they are or should i say where ,if you try a Manchester (NE) 1891 0rdance Survey map you will find them First Janet Street.... GUNSON Street used to be a lot longer in them days but if you walked up Gunson Street past Naylor Street The next main street would be Garrett Street cross over there staying on Gunson street and the next Right would be Janet Street With Lavender Street running off there Its a little street with about 10 dwellings in it More Miles Platting than Ancoats these days Next Strand Street that Dixon Street that Mike gave you was almost to the mark , Strand Street ran from the middle of Dixon Street at and angle to the right of Dixon Street to a street called Blank Street, it ran paralell to Woodward Street (back to back) which ran on to the top of Butler Street which is opposite Holland Street Hope this is useful bodzy

Benji [/quote Hi Benji no secrets here I use any tool i can get my hands on to find a result and in this case it was a Godfrey map Manchester (NE) 1891 Lancashire street 104.07 First edition 1893 available from L&MFHS at £2.25 i also use my "Geographia" Manchester Street Guide Second enquiry No you are not getting confused with any other Butler Street , if you start at Butler street on Bradford road heading towards Oldham Road there is a pub on your left ( well used to be ) called the Brown Cow, well known watering hole , that is Woodward Street just down there on your right was Dixon Street where Strand Street was off bodzy p.s. are you the same Benji that is on Knowhere ?

Update on map search! I called into the central library but they didn't have any 1891 maps in stock. Next stop Local studies who were very helpful in going through all the old maps. I could have had a print out of the map but decided to buy the Godfrey edition. When trying to establish where Janet St was we couldn't find it although her index book said it was where Boydz said it was. Mike could you tell me which map you quoted on the attachment you sent. (Belated thanks by the way) Did come away with a scan of the 1850 map of that area.Very Interesting

The Lancashire Records office in Preston is also a great source of information covering maps, businness direcories going back about 200 years. I got a map of Newton Heath from the 1931 which is an Ordnance Survey and shows streets that are mentioned in my genealogy research but which no longer exist. In fact the LRO has been a great source of info but I do intend to follow up on the links CLICK 4
