This morning I lay in bed, suddenly "Football Poools" came into my head..are they still in operation or did they bite the dust when UK lottery started??/I remember Littlewoods,Vernons and Zetters and I am sure there were more...some of my hard earned money was donated to Vernons over the years...I guess the post office would suffer too from the sale of stamps.

I'm not sure if Littlewoods or Vernons pools are still going. Zetters I think bit the dust years ago. Like you said, with the advent of the National lottery, the football pools were virtually wiped out overnight. However I think that you can still do the pools in local bookies shops on a kind of a fixed odds coupon. Having just done a quick check, you can also play the pools online.
A little bit of trivia. Littlewoods pools were started by John Moores and two friends who all donated £50. each to get the ball rolling so to speak.. John at the time lived in Holly St. Droylsden. He started off by standing outside Old Trafford Football Ground and promoting his "Pools coupon".
