Am I alone in thinking that television programs are steadily getting worse?
I am beginning to wonder if this is not a long term Government plot to bring pap to the masses, in order that our brains become so numbed by the endless drivel churned out on a daily basis, that we will only sit back dumbly whilst they ride rough shod over us, knowing that so long as we can get our regular dose of Jeremy Kyle or whatever, we are hardly likely to complain too loudly when they do and say things that any decent politician would have fallen on his sword for within living memory, had he or she been found out.
If you are not interested in cooking, house hunting, buying or selling antiques, quiz shows, watching people humiliating themselves, or listening to so called comedians spouting unfunny filth, then what do you like to watch? Is there a direct conection between a lot of the violence churned out on television, and the apparent increase in violence on our streets?
What programs could Manmates members happily do without, and what programs would members like to see brought back?

Shows such as "fools and Horses" are now on DVD...we get as many as six shows on one dvd.... the writers must have really enjoyed writing those type of shows....a little cussing now and then just as everyday life

I've really enjoyed watching the repeats of OF&H on BBC1and it made me realise what a load of rubbish is on the tv now compared to programs like Only Fools & Horses. When I saw that Big Brother has gone over to CH5 I did contemplate moving abroad.....what a load of rubbish.....do people actually watch programs such as that? Shows such as "fools and Horses" are now on DVD...we get as many as six shows on one dvd.... the writers must have really enjoyed writing those type of shows....a little cussing now and then just as everyday life

Could not disagree with any of Lisa's list, would add any thing with any 'Celebrity' in it, What do people like Paris Hilton contribute to our lives?, I was in a friends house a day or so back and his wife was watching OK!TV on Ch5 now that is dire full stop. but Ronnie Barker in Porridge was well worth watching. so was Hill Street Blues unlike todays CSI / Law and Order etc, how they (CSI) solve their cases can be laughable, ie a few small grains in sand in someones shoe and this sand is recognised within seconds because "this sand is only found in a certain area in this state".

I rarely watch CSI, and I never watch CSI Miami. I can't stand the red haired fella. However I enjoy watching NCIS, because I love the banter between them. I tend not to follow the plot too closely, it's pure escapism. I used to have a soft spot for Holly what'sher name, the femail director. Until she went and spoiled it by having all that plastic surgery.

I never watch CSI Miami. I can't stand the red haired fella.. same reason I and lots more cannot watch CSI Miami, he was in NYPD which took over from Hill Street Blues but however if the papers are to be believed ( not allways easy) after a few months his 'Demands' got silly due to his ego and he was dropped from NYPD a very short time later.

Let's bring back decent comedies like:
Yes, Minister. Only Fools and Horses The Two Ronnies Morecambe and Wise Timothy ? (the one with Ronnie Corbet as the downtrodden son) Sharp Intake of Breath Porridge Ooo, You Are Awful? Open All Hours
There's hundreds of decent programs that were worth watching and good old family fun(with not a swearword in earshot)....can anyone name some of them?

I would like to add Brideshaed re-visited and any of the other classics to the list. Most of them have been turned into great programmes. Also serials to make you think, such as House of cards, or Smiley's people. The list is endless when you start to think about it.

Unfortunately, now living in USA, I am unable to comment about the present quality of British TV. But before I left the shores, the standard was already following a sharp decline, with the introduction of ’reality programs’ such as Big Brother, I’m a Celebrity etc., and Survivor. It’s TV that is cheap to produce and that is the problem. People off the streets who want their ’15 minutes of fame’ and Z-List celebrities are great for the producers because they can keep fees low, rather than paying named stars the prices they demand. The introduction of ’Alternative Comedy’ also contributed to the lack of quality. The definition of this must be that it is just not funny, that’s why its called ’alternative’. I watched one episode of The Office and did not laugh once. And what can I say about Harry Hill !! To your list Lisa, can I add ’ Dear John’, ’Butterflies’, ’2.3 Children’, Vicar of Dibley’ and ’Fawlty Towers’. On the non-comedy side, ’Inspector Morse’, ’Lovejoy’, ’Frost’ and ’Jonathan Creek’.

Some good news for Lisa. Looks like Yes Prime Minister is to return. www.theregister.co.uk/2012/03/30/yes_minister/There are still some good programmes on like Sherlock Holmes, Merlin and Life on Mars, and some of my all time favourites like The Avengers pop up every now and again. I think the problem is related to the number of channels we now have, quantity certainly doesn't always enhance the quality.

The only comedy shows I liked were Dads Army and Last of the Summer Wine. Cannot stand Fools and Horses, Ronnie Barker, Ronnie Corbet, Morecambe and Wise, Falty Towers, or most of the other rubbish. Hardly ever watch British detective shows, they are utter garbage. Much prefer Law and Order, Law and Order SVU. Have to agree much of tv today is utter garbage, it alway amazes me how someone like Simon Cowell and make so much money from so much rubbish.

How can someone not like Fawlty Towers?? I dont watch CSI anymore due to the reason I stated in my post on this thread 05/08/11, but British detective shows ? how about the 1980's Sherlock Holmes which appear on itv3 now and again, ok it is a collection of old films but I can watch them again and again, going back to comedy I cannot stand people like Jimmy Carr not funny at all and why he had to use the c--- word as he did in a show in Birmingham which was on late night BBB1 last year I never will know, likewise how do people find Alan Carr funny?, and Frankie Boyle just leaves me cold, he just picks on those who cannot answer back, like the disabled, I would not watch him if you gave me a free ticket.

I agree Southampton. How could anyone not like Fawlty Towers or Only Fools and Horses? The most disgusting comedian I have ever heard is Roy Chubby Brown. Someone lent me his video and I was truly horrified that anyone could listen to such drivel and filth. Its an insult to women to hear them degraded in that way and I would never ever go to any of his shows. Any comedian that needs to use foul language to get his point over isnt a comedian in my view. Comedians like Les Dawson and Victoria Wood dont need bad language to make people laugh. Cannot stand Fawlty Towers, or most of the other rubbish. I was very surprised but pleased that they have recently shown all of the old series Rising Damp. I watched it and enjoyed it. (With the curtains closed of course. For fear that the thought police would spot me watching it and confiscate my television.)

Britains got talent, amazing amount of talent for such a little country. I saw Jonathon and Charlotte sing on Youtube, he's got a gift.

I'm beginning to think you are right in only watching certain things. Someone once told me that if you look in the top right-hand corner of your tv you will see flickering. I was told its to program us......dont know if its true or not but if you watch children they become hypnotised by the screen. I only watch certain educational programs and a few others that are not full of bad language or sex. If I feel uncomfortable with a program, I switch it off. Whatever next Kay?
