What a coincidence jackaitch, because on my Facebook page each day I publish a photograph I have taken and give some information about it. Last week I chose Blackpool Tower, so here is what i found. It was built after one of the Mayors of the town saw the Eiffel Tower during a visit to Paris and decided Blackpool should have a tower. So work was started in 1891 and finished in 1894. Unfortunately it was not painted properly and it started to corrode so between 1921 and 1924 it was taken down and all the steelwork replaced. It is repainted every seven years, normally dark red but in it's centenary year, 1994, was painted gold. For safety the tower has to be closed if winds exceed 45mph, but it was designed so that if it ever did collapse it would fall into the sea, which is re-assuring for those at the top if that ever happens!
