I grew up in Maple Street, Pendleton during the 60's, it was off Nursery Street and we had the original cobbled streets in that area. It was a close knit community and everyone knew each other. I was friends with Christine Lewin and her Family and we used to go to Rhyl during the weekends in Summer. The entire family used to go in a specially fitted out van, great days. We ate Spangles and fruit polo's en route! Is there anyone from that area who remembers the shops on Broad Street and Cross Lane Market?

Hi soloblue, I worked for the Salford City Reporter on Broad Street for three years in the 60s. I can't really remember many of the shops, there was a chippie near the junction with Cross Lane we always used, I think there was a Woolies nearby and a couple of pubs but can't remember the names I'm afraid. There was also a church on the other side of the road we used to store toys for the newpaper's annual Christmas kids toy appeal. I drank in a few of the pubs on Cross Lane which was a road I recall someone claiming there were more pubs on its length than anywhere else in the area. I also recall covering the final night of six pubs closing down at the same time in Hanky Park before the bulldozers moved in and the building of the high rise flats started. The crane they used was said to be the tallest in Europe at the time and I attended the topping out ceremony of the first block to be finished. I enjoyed working in Salford because there was always a feeling of a tight-knit community minded people who cared for their neighbours.

Thanks for replying, yes there was a great sense of community in Salford during the 60's. I used to go to the cinema on Cross lane with my mum. I loved the Cross Lane market. There was a stall there called Nippers Chippers that sold lovely crockery and the clothes and shoes were so cheap. You could get a glam pair of shoes there for 19/11! Happy Days
