Hi OLLY, whilst browsing I've only just found your post, and the website, thanks very much it's great, I grew up in Clayton, our back garden came onto the vale, so it's nice to see how it is now, I intend to visit it sometime, thanks again. Cath.

RE.SAMMIES HUT. IT WAS A BRICK BUILT HUT AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE TIP, SAMMY WAS THE WATCHMAN AND HE WOULD LOG THE TIPPERS BRINGING THE WASTE FROM THE PIT.IN THE WINTER HE ALWAYS HAD A BLAZING COAL FIRE INSIDE IT WAS A GREAT MEETING PLACE FOR THE LOCAL KIDS AS YOU COULD STAND AGAINST THE OUTSIDE WALL AND FEEL THE HEAT.ANYBODY WHO REMEMBERS THE COAL PICKING ON THE TIP WILL KNOW SAMMIES HUT.

Clayton Vale I reckon The vale started at Clayton bridge ,and the Dingle started at Bank St where they joined I dont know .Why did nobody mention Daddy Naylors pond where we fished .Clayton Vale was also known as a monkey run on Summer Sunday nights. But that was a long long time ago.alfiep

Hi Alfie, Long time no see!! How have you been? Bank Street reminds me of the long walks I took with my dad when we walked to see his brother in Newton Heath and we passed under the arches and Clayton Vale. Didnt we walk long distances in those days? It never seemed to bother us to walk for miles - better and cheaper than the bus. A boyfriend of mine at the time used to walk from my home in Clayton all the way to Moston via Bank Street in the early hours of Sunday morning but it never seemed to worry him. Dont suppose one could do that walk now without getting mugged, or worse.

Hi Jimbo, Loved your recollections of visits to the Vale and Philips Park.......Daisy Nook - now that stirs the memories. Jam butties and a bottle of pop and a few pennies to spend.....a gang of us would walk all the way at Easter or Whitsun with an older one in charge......when we finally got there and walked along that long dirt track to the fair we were so thirsty we just drank the water from the stream. A penny for the dodgems, a candy floss, and maybe a crack at the coconut shy. There was also a tent with the Bearded Lady or the midgets and loads of weird and wonderful things in jars to stare at in wonderment. The noise was tremendous and at the end of the day, all money spent, we would head home, very weary, tired and hungry. Yet, we still did it every year and I can still feel the excitement as we walked along that dirt track to the sound of the fairground and the smell of the toffee apples and candy floss. Happy memories.
