Whilst on a shopping trip to Urmston with my mum on Saturday,,i spotted a skip with what looked the contents of a house clearance in it. Needless to say,,i was soon rummaging through the contents!! {i cant help myself } I came away with a large assortment of batteries ,still in date and all in original packaging,,some assorted drill bits,,a couple of decent tools,,,and my favourite find,,,25 copies of WW2 newspapers,,,,these were copies of the original newspapers of the day,,ranging from 1939 to 1945,and i have spent all morning reading them. I was fascinated to read the news of the war as it was reported,,,and to see the adverts for the wierd and wonderful medicines of the day. There was also 4 reproductions of colour posters,,one was a recruiting poster for the Wrens,,,but the strangest poster was a full colour poster of Adolf Hitler !! it was very strange to see this large print of Herr Hitler spread out on my coffee table !!!!!

Mick, I've often seen skips full of stuff and would love to have the courage to rummage through it. Its amazing how much stuff gets thrown out especially from older people's homes without knowing the value of it. I love rummaging through charity shops and car boot sales for the very same reason. I've often come across a piece of furniture in a bad state, had a good look for woodworm, then brought it home and renovated it. I have a beautiful dresser in my kitchen that I bought on a Flea Market. It was painted yellow but the thing that drew my attention was the marble top. It weighed a ton. I haggled for it and even got the man to deliver it AND carry the marble top indoors. I stripped it and put the marble in the bath and bleached it. It came up like new and the wood underneath the yellow paint was rosewood. All it needed was some new brass handles......now its takes pride of place.

I play golf with a guy who visits all the pawn and charity shops frequently...he finds all kinds of clubs and equipment of all kinds which he cleans up and restores then has no trouble selling for a nice profit
what was the old saying "where there is muck there is brass"!!!!!!!

Morning Jacka, I used to collect old tools....they are far better made than today's tools. My garden tools are old ones with lovely wooden handles. I'm always amazed at what people throw out. Maybe its because I'm a post-war baby and everything was looked after or handed down. I remember when my gran died, I must have been only 18, and I saw my uncles smashing these beautiful dressers and cupboards in her yard and burning the wood. They would be worth a fortune now. Most of my paintings have come from either junk shops or antique shops. I'd love to have my home totally Victorian. Wish I was as brave as Mike climbing into a skip....I'd be in my element.

I did find an original old Lois Vuitton handbag in a charity shop a few years ago. I cleaned it up (it smelled of cigarette smoke) and I could sell it on EBay for quite a bit. Vintage handbags are very popular at the moment...but I'm rather fond of it, so I'll hang onto it until I'm desperate. Paid £2.99 for it.

I think one of my best buys was a Subbuteo football set from a charity shop,,,i t was the full set,,2 teams, the pitch, the nets and a ball,,it wasnt a particularly old set,,in fact it was relatively modern,,but whoever owned it had bought another boxed football team and that was in the box aswell...I decided to keep the full set and sell the extra team,,,The boxed set had cost £2,,,i sold the extra team on e-bay for £70 !!!!!!! seems i had got lucky and the extra team was a rare one,,,
