Just been to visit Philips park cemetery and although most of it is in pretty good condition,,i was a bit miffed at the state of the I consecrated section,,,these are communal graves and the stones are laid flat. Most of these are invisible to the eye as they have been left to "grass over". I dont think it would have been too much trouble to keep this from happening. I was looking for a couple of graves on behalf of a fellow manmates member,,,but i had no chance of finding them Not a wasted journey though,,,said hello to my great great grandparents ;D

Hi Mike...I take it that it was myself you were looking for a couple graves for? I wonder why the grass has not been cut, maybe it will be in the summer? or is that wishful thinking? I think this is why they won't allow any sort of curb stones around the graves in most cemeteries here now, its easier for them to cut the grass...The grave stones I told you about where my gran and grandad are in Philips park the headstones are all laid down flat and very often when we have been there the grass has been around your ankles..my friend in Ashton said a lot of cemeteries lay the older headstones down ~ she was told a lot of them have fell down of were halfway down and they are a danger (Health and safety) If I had the time and weather when we have been there I would at least try and paint the stone up again like we used to years ago..just white and black lettering...but there again if the grass are going to cover them up there seems no point...sad that its left to get in a state like that..anyway never mind Mike, thanks for your time and help, all assuming it was me were looking for the graves for.

Hi Mike. My parents are both buried in Southern Cemetry. There is a section there practically the same as you have described. It's rediculous that they are not well kept. Even if the families are no longer living or not around for whatever reason to keep them cleared which they shouldn't have to do. There should be a way of the cemetary maintaining & clearing to upkeep the area's :-D

Hi Charlie...know what you mean, we have family buried in Southern Cemetery, and its gone down hill in parts, no one there to take care of the graves either, so when we go back to M/C each year we do the tour of Southern and Philips Park, trry and clean up the stones as best we can and put flowers down...but loads of stones have been broken laid down...they actually took the curbing stone off my grans grave....its sad to see how the place has been neglected.

Well Jedders I think I would have a job offering to help clean up the cemeteries in M/c being that I live in Cornwall but I always go to the cemetries that I know my family are in. Down here you are only expected to look after the gravestones of your families...I get told off for cutting the grass around my parents grave, but they don't do it often ~ yet they don't allow curbstones around graves for the simple reason its easier for them to cut, so they are to blame for that. I will continue to cut the grass whether they like it or not, we paid for that plot. As for the family graves in M/C there is no one left there that would even know about them, and all my family moved to cornwall...sad really.

I dont think they would let anyone volunteer to clean up the cemeteries....our good old HEALTH AND SAFETY has seen to that!!! Regarding the flat grave stones at Phillips park cemetery, they take a bit of working out most of the time that is if there is one still there, but you can locate them. It just means you may have to uncover a few befor you find the correct gravestone. In there favour, they are in 100% mint condition, so that a plus. As for the state of the cemeteries, it is only with this new found interest in family history that people even bother to go to these cemeteries. Most people including my self, never bothered with them for years. At least Manchester council are trying to put right the years of neglect, the shame has to be carried bye every person in Manchester for doing nothing befor. How many who come on this site volunteer there free time to any help regarding the Manchester cemeteries?

Hi Jedders...Knew what you were saying, but got no groups here they won't allow it. Curbing stones do hinder grass cutting, I just think the councils are a bit hypocritical taking the curbing stones away and then not cutting the grass for weeks so it's nearly covering some of the headstones.

Hi Jedders, I agree about the dog fouling. No respect to allow a dog to foul anywhere let alone in a graveyard. I suspect they think they wont be caught in there. I'm thinking of buying one of those megahorns.....I keep seeing people on my road walking their dogs and allowing them to foul the verges - right under the notices saying £1000 fine. Its nearly always just as it goes dark hoping they will not be seen. I opened my window once and shouted at the top of my voice "If you dont pick that S H I T up it'll come through your letter-box in ten minutes". It was so funny watching the woman looking around to see where this voice was coming from. She came back five minutes later to pick it up. Now I want to buy one of those megaphones and do it every time I see someone letting their dog foul and not picking it up. IRRESPONSIBLE what I call them. I find to many cemeteries allow people to put all sorts in the cemeteries, wind chimes/toys flags plastic covering/rails and really make the cemeteries look so tacky. Another thing i don't get is why do they allow or even more so, why do people take dogs in the cemeteries? Every one i talk to says" Oh! always pick up any mess my dog makes" yea! like we all know thats true. I see so much dog fouling in my travels around the cemeteries and they wee all over the place, try and get that in a pooper scooper. Any one who need cemetery maps/plans, this site has most of Manchester & Salford's. www.twbaird.co.uk/cemplans/plansindex.html
