I stumbled across this brilliant site today, it's by a man called David Boardman. If you click on any photograph in the link below, it will take you on a nostalgic tour of Manchester. manchesterhistory.net/manchester/ManMenu.html

I remember the high street (victoria) baths in Longsight, that was a long walk from Rusholme.
The longsight cricket club was my freinds favourite pub, I was in there a couple of times, nothing interesting, just a drinking hole.

The longsight cricket club was my freinds favourite pub, I was in there a couple of times, nothing interesting, just a drinking hole. Way back in the 70s I worked nights at a company called ICL in West Gorton. Every Friday morning after we had finished work, a group of us would go to Victoria baths. It was a fantastic building inside. All tiled and marbled rooms for various pampering pleasures. It became like a special Friday morning club where a group of like minded individuals would meet up for a swim and a sauna after work. They even had a special refreshment area with large arm chairs and a television in there. Believe it or not they also had a waiter who would bring you tea and toast or egg and bacon on toast etc. Remember that this was a public baths and therefore open to anybody. Can you imagine that happening nowadays? The whole place has recently been completely refurbished. I am not sure if is fully open to the public yet, but on one Sunday every month it is open to the public for them to have a tour of the place.

IN DEFENCE OF LONGSIGHT CRICKET CLUB.......YOU DONT MENTION THE FINE CRICKET PITCH....OR THE BOWLING GREEN WHICH IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST IN MANCHESTER.....OR TENNIS COURT..... I SUPPOSE THE ENGLISH SPORTING HOBBIES AND PASTIMES WAY OF LIFE IS LOST AND FORGOTTEN WHEN PEOPLE MOVE TO CERTAIN COUNTRIES ........

Hi CabbieJohn, Victoria Baths is still a wonderful building. I had the pleasure to attend an AGM two years ago and we were shown around the building by the woman who works as a volunteer there. We were even shown the residence of the then Manager of the Baths upstairs and it was huge. There was even a special bath-tub where people were submerged if they had certain skin ailments. They talked about bringing the Turkish bath back to its original state and we watched as they took the stained-glass windows out for repair. A few months later the building was opened to the public but I dont think it was open for general swimming. I would love to go for a Turkish bath if and and when they open properly to the public.

Would skates to all the latest musie's Had the time of our life's. Think i stop round about being 17 than found dancing . This place was in Manchester and very popular There was another roller skating rink that I remember. It was on Anson road, close to the junction of thingyinson Road. I think that it was called Birchfields Palais. They used to occasionally have pop groups appearing there. I remember seeing Brian Poole and the Tremeloe's, and Hermans Hermits there. Does anybody remember them? After the rink closed down it became a night club called I think Oceans eleven amongst other names. The building is still there, it's now a Turkish food market. P.S. I couldn't understand why I couldn't spell thingyinson Road, until I realised that it could be misinterpreted as a rude word. so for the purposes of this posting the skating rink was close to the junction of Anson Road and DOCKINSON Road! I haven't heard it called a thingy for years......... ;D ;D ;D

LIN..A THINK THEY MEEN STOCKPORT ROAD ROLLER RINK....I PLAYED ROLLER HOCKEY FOR THEM MANY MOONS AGO..... Hi. OLLY. This is the place that I was referring to. did you ever skate here? The recollections below are taken from another site. Birch Park Palace (later Oceans 11) thingyenson Road, Rusholme My clubbing began at " THE RINK " in Birchfields, a roller skating rink that was just dipping its toes in the entertainment water at the time. Here I saw " THE PRETTY THINGS ", "THE IN CROWD " and also had a ticket to see " TOM JONES " but he got a hit with " ITS NOT UNUSUAL " and bailed on the gig. Jim Massie I remember playing in my first group "THE DEPUTIES" from Stockport. We were only kids, and one of our first gigs was at the Birch Park skating club (later Ocean's 11). The DJ was called BILLY QT, and he tied a mike lead to a chair, whilst walking on and miming to "Sea Cruise". The record stuck, and he got booed off!!! Happy days!!!! Rob Parkes I was once taken to Ocean's 11 as the guest of a supplier. The supplier paid for everything, including Life Membership of Oceans 11. A couple of weeks later I received a letter from Oceans 11 to tell me that my life membership had expired... Pete Crooks 16/6/09

Hi Cabbiejohn, If you look at the Forum Rules, you will see some of the words that the American owner considers offensive....some of the words I've never heard of. If you want to put say D I C K I NSON Road, you have to put a space in between the D I C K There's a word on there which they consider as offensive.....and the word......is......S P O O N. Apparently the word refers to a female anatomy. Dont ask me why.

To my surprise the word was accepted without any problem. The word begins with F and ends with Y. To my surprise and delight the word sneaked past the American censors and was published in full. However me being a gentleman and an ex cabby, I would never dream of publishing the word in full, for fear that it may upset some of our more delicate readers. Oh go on then. The word was Funny!

Hi. OLLY. I don't think that the roller skating rink close to the junction with Anson, Birchfields, and D i ckinson roads was ever an ice rink. However you have reminded me of the ice rink that used to be in Derby street Cheetham, did you ever go there? I never went there myself, but there must be lots of Manmates members who went there, who would like to share their reminiscences of the place with us? John.

cabbyjohn,What a star,I have been on the website Manchester History .net,David Boardman, and found a complete write up of my old school Ardwick Central and the evacuation details from 1939 of which I was part.I went to Blackthorn School in Bacup and was in the Deerplay Inn on the moors outside Bacup when I heard that war had been declared and I listened to the speech by Neville Chamberlain, what memories. Thanks for awakening old memories.I noticed that there were no photographic records after 1938 until 1952,whatever happened to camera's.

Hi. Parbuster, I'm glad to have been of help, but that's what this site is all about. I am also a relative newcomer to Manmates, and I have found everybody to be very friendly and a great help, whenever I have needed assistance in having my memory jogged or asking for help. If you are looking for any particular photographs of a place or period, if you post your query on here, the chances are that somebody will know, or at least be able to point you in the right direction. Happy reading, John.

The Ice Palace in Derby Street, Cheetham Hill was later re-named Silver Blades. The building is now a factory. A few years ago I went on a tour with the Jewish Museum of the area.....fascinating. We got a history of the area and how the first Jews settled in Cheetham Hill. Just a few doors away from the Ice Palace is the original building that Marks and Spencer first used when they set up their Penny stalls. I used to skate at the Ice Palace every Saturday....first for lessons, then I stayed on for the afternoon and evening sessions. There was an actual huge organ which played during all the sessions. I will never forget the smell of the place as you walked in. After each session a man on a machine scraped all the melted ice from the rink, sprayed it with fresh water and re-iced it. The building was originally painted white to reflect and Ice Palace.

Hi Lin. I remember Victoria/Hathersage Road baths very well & Only yesterday a MM friend sent me a couple of piccies of things going on inside. It was always freezing cold when you went from the changing area to the pool itself which was literally infront of the changing room doors. I never used the hot steam/ turkish baths in there though? Bu did use the sauna it was great? An old pals mum worked in there for many years. When we went after school or weekends. We always had toast & hot vimto or hot oxo on the way out. Mmmm Lovely :-P
