I've just been to Sainsbury's to buy a couple of packets of Lancashire Eccles cakes, and find that the supermarket is now selling its own brand. They look exactly the same as the originals, but the description now says 'Butter-enriched' whereas the Edmonds type used the phrase 'made with butter', or something like that. Oh, and the price has increased by 10p a packet. I didn't buy any, as I am sure they will be inferior in taste, so they have lost out this time. I will have to find another source. Why don't they leave our food alone? Ever the search for bigger profits.

I wish I could buy some Eccles cakes, they've not had them in the stores here in C/wall for a very long time...maybe they will be reviving them..

Just been to Asda, only to discover that they also have their own brand, now. Also, 10p dearer. I bought a packet to try, but I am sure the recipe is not quite the same, and I am pretty sure that they have down-sized them. Significantly, there is no weight printed on the packaging. If anyone on here buys the originals, I would like to compare some of the data on the packet, also compare the weight of the cakes. Mine weigh between 45 - 50 grams each. I just hate being short-changed.

Hi Ourkid, Why not e-mail the manufacturers of the Eccles Cakes and show them up? I've noticed a lot of products being down-sized without a word to the customers or explanation. Its amazing what a letter or e-mail can produce. I wrote to M&S ages ago about Hydrogenated Fats and their response was pathetic and dismissive.......then weeks later I noticed posters on their Food Hall walls stating that they had removed all the dangerous HVO's. If more people complained, then manufacturers would have to listen to us. I always tell them that I am not buying their products any more until they improve their recipes.....it usually works.

Our kid...lucky you I can't get Eccles cake where I am, I don't know why cos they used to sell them.? Well, Lin, it might be the distance they have to be transported in relation to demand. I have now found the original list of ingredients, and I was right. Here are the two lists. Edmonds. Vostizza Currants (20%), Raisins (20%), Untreated Wheat Flour, Butter (9.1%), Sugar, Water, Vegetable Fat, Vegetable Margarine, Dried Skimmed Milk, Salt. Asda recipe. Vine fruits (48%) (Currants, Raisins) Wheat Flour, unsalted Butter (10%), Water, Sugar, Vegetable Fat (Vegetable Oils, Water, Salt, Emulsifier (Mono- and Glycerides of Fatty Acids), Invert Sugar Syrup (Fructose), Salt, Skimmed Milk Powder. Fructose, a cheap substitute for sugar, is particularly harmful, especially in the case of diabetics. "Mono and glycerides" is another term for trans fats. It is obvious that Asda and Sainsburys do not have the welfare of the customers at heart, vending this rubbish. All I need to know now is the individual weight of the cakes, in order to assess the true size of this rip-off. I shall be contacting Asda and Sainsburys, later, for their comments. That should be a real laugh.

Sorry, Lisa. Missed your post. As you can see, I shall be doing as you suggest. I am composing a letter to Edmonds, Ardwick, today for some further information.

Hi Ourkid, I'd also question the 'margarine'......because it usually contains HVO's but doesnt have to say on the packet.....just 'margarine'. Unless the customers start kicking back, they will put absolutely anything in the food. Even the FSA (Food Standards Agency) isnt pushing enough for clearer labelling. We've heard this for years about labelling and its still questionable.

Lisa. I don't think that Edmonds have down-sized theirs, and I am not even sure that they make them for the supermarkets. However, I have the MDs details from their website, and I shall be writing to him, expressing my concerns. As for margarine, Lisa, the same goes for shortening. We'll all be murdered in our beds. ;D ;D ;D
