Hi John1995, I think diet is more or less the same for men as it is for women, I put my husband on a diet, he was told his cholestrol was high, he lost a couple of stone but that was by eating smaller meals, no alcohol, no sweet stuff and little carbs...and of course nothing fried...he was told by the Dr that he must not eat cheese at all, it is apparently the worse thing for sending the cholestrol through the roof, and also not too many eggs...He ate loads of fresh fruit and veg, fish and chicken.

hi lin, thanks for the info, i guess the diets are the same for men and women but can tell me why all advertising seems geared to women and also thier health issues ,when everthing should be all things equal. I know the people who promote the idea of losing wieght for women are out to increase thier profits thats why women are an easy target. all i want really is that men get the same info wieght and health issues. I hope i am not rambling am i making any sense.

Hi John1995, I know what you mean, I think it's always been the same for women, if it's not clothes it's make-up...I also think that women may talk about health issues more than men do, so that's why it's in everything you read or hear, it should be there for both really...maybe if you punched in online what it is you want to know you will come up with something...'Mens issues' you never know you may be surprised...good luck

The mention of cheese being bad is so right. I saw this TV programme that my dad had recorded the other day and as an experiment this famous athlete ate a pound of cheese a day and the amount of problems it caused were unbelievable.

Hi Kent, that is perfectly right, it's one of the worse things you can eat, and one of the most fattening, of course it's one of those foods that so many people love.

Hi John No single food can provide us with all the nutrients that are bodies need , so diets are no good they only work for a while You should eat all the vitermins and minerals that we need to stay healthy Eat plentry of Fruit and Veg (try 5 handfulls a day) Eat starchy food with every meal(bread rice ,pasta potatoes ) Aim to eat more Fish (especially oilly fish ,Salmon ,Tuna, sardines etc) Reduce foods high in saturated fats( butter , sausages crisps, cakes ,bisquits sugarry drinks) Keep your Salt intake low ( most food we eat already has salt in it ) Also eat the right amount ( dont take in more calories than you need ) Weigh yourself regular to notice any weight loss or gain Get up and walk around the block and when you can do that 3 times a week try 4 then 5 but not to quick walking slowly2miles per hour will lose 75 calories every 30 mins so brisk walking will do 4mph will lose 150 calories Try to avoid butter ,eggs and cream cook in Olive oil or rapeseed oil, try choosing lower fat alternatives eat moderate amounts of food choose wholemeal or high fibre versions of bread exercise whenever possible It prevents heart disease, controlls blood pressure, reducess stress ,controls weight decreases risk of cancer of the colon swimming, tennis goin to the gym or even just walking ,starting with just 3 times aweek will help any sort of exercise will do even cleaning and dusting ,painting and decorating or even hoovering So there you are thats the secret
make a plan stick to and you wont go to keep Fat classes any more
good luck

Hi Tommy, yes it is strange how it effects ppl differently, but I think it's not just cholesterol they're talking about...as I was saying to Lisa, it make me mad that they tell you how something is so good for you, and in the next breathe they tall you how bad it is, and it's with just about everything we eat and drink.

Hi TaffyDee, Sorry to hear about your Diabetes but glad to hear that Bodzy's diet suggestions have been useful. I'm sure if you stick to the advice your Nurse gives you, you'll be ok. Cheese is one of my favourite foods and I dont know how I'd feel if I was told I'd have to give it up. I suppose as we all get older and get illnesses we have to listen to the good advice given to us. It will be interesting to hear how you are coping with it, so please keep us informed. You never know, you may be able to pass on some of your valuable experience to others, just as Bodzy did.

hi belinda, yes I had that double test, but at the clinic within our local surgery,it measures your bodies tolerance to glucose apparently,I would advise him to take a book or something to occupy that two hour gap as they don't advise too much activity between tests in case it alters the findings or something like that.Be warned though,he may well have three seperate "pee"tests over a month to measure the ensigms? in the body as a further diagnostic test, wish him good luck from me.

ps. anyone notice how all the things we used to eat, cheese, eggs, rough breads and local meats including red meats were all good for us then and now the experts tell us most of it is bad!can you recall some of the things that used to be commonplace but are never seen in shops any more?

Hi Taffydee, You used to see a lot of offal in the shops but we dont see much of that now. My mum used to buy SHEEP'S HEAD and boil it for hours, then press it and use it sliced in sandwiches. Also SHEEP's TONGUES and HEARTS......you could also buy LITES (lungs) for your pets. There was also a lot of UCP shops which sold tripe, chittlings, pigs trotters etc., but you dont see them any more. Also OXTAIL. Also WIMBERRIES - has anyone ever seen them in the shops recently? ps. anyone notice how all the things we used to eat, cheese, eggs, rough breads and local meats including red meats were all good for us then and now the experts tell us most of it is bad!can you recall some of the things that used to be commonplace but are never seen in shops any more?

Migky,
I have deleted the large photos you put on the forum. They were slowing the loading of the page right down and also causing distortion making the page too large to fit the window.
Please remember that some people are still on dial-up and don't have broadband. Also all photos must stay withing the page range. So please keep them small.
Alan
