I didn't live in Manchester in the Swinging Sixties - came from the Cheshire backwoods. But for me and my mates Manchester was Mecca because of its club scene. We went regularly to the Wheel in 1964-65 where we saw budding UK stars and some great US acts. We watched the Stones at the Palace in early '65 - anyone else there? And does anyone remember a club called the Manchester Cavern, somewhere near Piccadilly station if memory serves right. It was only around for a brief spell and I'm sure that was its name (taken, of course, from the Cavern in Liverpool). We saw Manfred Mann there one Saturday night in '65. Manchester, I suppose, was a bit dour and scruffy in parts in those days but the vibes were fantastic. It led the way in British Blues and R and B music.

Hi Colin, Welcome to Manmates. I remember the Twisted Wheel in the 60's....all dark and dingy but great groups. Dont remember the name The Cavern but I probably did go there as I went to most of the clubs in the 60's.....I just cant remember most of their names. Does anyone remember the Mogambo Coffee Bar Off Portland Street? Used to go in there for coffee after the clubs. I spent most of my time at The Manchester Sports Guild in New Millgate in the 60's before I left for London.

Hello Lisa - yes I remember the Mogambo. The MSG often had folk groups, didn't it? I think I saw Martin Carthy there. They sold Newcastle Brown ale.

I used to go in a club in kennady st off fountain st called the three coins, jimmy saville was a regular visitor there, during a break in the evening we used to get a pass out , which was a stamp on the back of the hand, go to the pub next door ( the city arms) which in fact is probably still there. later the three coins was replaced by beat city for a few years. groups appearing on stage were big three factotums and the mojos , they used to throw demo discs into the audience in which i had quite a few

Hi Dave, THE THREE COINS.....now thats triggered my memory. Used to go in that club as well. There was also a club off Spring Gardens/Fountain Street (I think) that In used to go to. It was different from other clubs in that it had a man playing a grand piano and you could dance to the music on a small dancefloor. Does anyone know the name of it. We used to go on a Saturday and it wasnt dimly lit like other clubs in the area....a little bit more upmarket. Wish I could remember the name.

I may be wrong but, as I recall, wasn't the Cavern in Cromford Court? A blast from the past. I used to work in Cromford Court in the early fifties. Thomas Edison had a branch office there. No musical accompaniment, though.
