Reminds me of Charles Laughton in Hobsons Choice playing a typical Manchester father in the movie..set in Salford in the 1890's.....Not only would he take off his belt and threaten his kids but also his employees in his boot shop....Yep..Happy Days.....Ian..vancouver..

I can remember getting whacked with my dads belt, can't remember what for though but whatever it was I hadn't done it, my sister had done something and she had blamed it on me, and of course her being the youngest and my dads favourite he believed her..................only good thing was a while later my dad (bless him) must have realised and he waited till Granellis (ice cream) came round and bought me a large cornet...........
But yes we all knew that if we stepped out of line and did something bad chances were you would "cop" for the belt,or a good slap, so obviously we were quick to realise never to do anything that would result in us getting the belt, and we never did get the belt again.......... no such thing then as childline we took it in our stride.......... and no I haven't abused my kids in any way because of it

WELL I WOULD GET A GOOD HIDING IF I HAD DONE SOMETHING BAD, OR CHEEKY...BUT IT WAS NEVER WITH A BELT, AND YOU DID LEARN NOT TO DO IT AGAIN..NEVER LOST ANY RESPECT FOR MY DAD EITHER...IT WAS RARE THAT I HAD A GOOD HIDING THOUGH, JUST A LOOK COULD DO IT..OR SOMETIMES HE WOULDN'T SPEAK TO ME...NOW THAT WAS A KILLER FOR ME, I WOULD RATHER HAVE THE GOOD HIDING THAN MY DAD NOT SPEAK TO ME ;D MY KIDS HAD THE SAME BUT LIKE JEAN SAYS, I NEVER ABUSED HER KIDS, I NEVER ABUSED MINE...LETS FACE IT MOST KIDS WERE BETTER BEHAVED.

No leather belt ..... but my Father used (but very rarely) the dreaded Army issue belt - with solid brass buckles and fasteners. Though he NEVER used the metal ends. He only used it when under 'instruction' from my Mother.
