If anyone is interested in reading about crime in nineteenth century Manchester and Salford, you might take a look at a new website: gangsofmanchester.comThe site was created to promote a new book on the "scuttling" gangs (territorial youth gangs) which terrorised the streets of Manchester and Salford in the years from 1870 to 1900. The book is packed with stories from Angel Meadow, Ancoats, Bradford, Gorton, Openshaw and Salford. The website contains links to features on BBC Manchester Online and the Guardian Online. The site also has some poems by the Manchester poet and novelist Mike Duff, and information about a play about "the scuttlers" to be performed at the Library Theatre, Manchester, next year. Thanks for reading this, and if anyone has any family stories about "the scuttlers" I'd love to hear them! Best wishes, Andy (author of The Gangs of Manchester)

I saw the article on Inside Out on BBC 1 last week about the Scuttlers, and Nigel Pivaro talking to you about it, and your book about the same subject. I shall have to get a copy of your book ('The Gangs of Manchester: The Story of The Scuttlers.'). I met one of our members (Bodzy) last week and he tells me you are also writing a book about the gangs of Glasgow. If this is so, being that I am a Glaswegian myself, I would be interested in this one also. Thanks again for the link. I am sure a lot of our members will be interested? If anyone is interested in the BBC article go to the BBC site and type in Scuttlers

Hi Andy, great talk you gave the other week at the town hall. It really gave a good insight into the gang culture at the time and can see that the gangs of today don't seem half as bad( Not that you can convince todays victims of that) I look forward to seeing the play in August ( Angels with Manky Faces ) Should be a good night from what i seen from the short but wonky clip that was played at your talk. ;D Mike

Hi Mick, I must get around to reading that book next time I'm in the Library.....that's if the Government havent closed it down too!!! By the way Mick, thanks a million for doing research on the family in that bible. Is there any chance of any remaining family member still being alive so I can contact them and perhaps return the Bible to them?
