Just for a minute, forget everything stressful and read this...............
Close your eyes and go back in time... Before the Internet... Before semi-automatics, joyriders and crack.... Before Playstations, x-box or Super Nintendo...
Way back......
I'm talking about Hide and Seek in the park. The corner shop. Hopscotch. Butterscotch. Skipping. Handstands. Football with an old can. Fingerbobs. Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the menace. Roly Poly. Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams. The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass. Bazooka Joe bubble gum. An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe Neapolitan or perhaps a screwball.
Wait......
Watching Saturday morning cartoons, short commercials or the flicks. Children's Film Foundation, The Double Deckers, Red Hand Gang, The Tomorrow People, Tiswas or Swapshop?, and 'Why Don't You'? - or staying up for Doctor Who. When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere. Earwigs, wasps, stinging nettles and bee stings. White dog sh*t. Sticky fingers. Playing Marbles. Ball bearings. Big 'uns and Little 'uns. Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, and Zorro. Climbing trees. Building igloos out of snow banks. Walking to school, no matter what the weather. Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt. Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights. Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles. Being tired from playing....remember that? The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team. Water balloons were the ultimate weapon. Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle. Choppers and Grifters. Twist grip 3 speed gears Everyone had Police sirens on their bikes. Small narrow skateboards and adjustable rollerskates Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops.
Remember when...
There were two types of trainers - girls and boys, and Dunlop Green Flash and the only time you wore them at school was for P.E. You knew everyone in your street - and so did your parents. It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends. You didn't sleep a wink on Christmas eve. When nobody owned a pure-bred dog. When 25p was decent pocket money Curly Wurlys. Space Dust. Toffo's. Top Trumps. When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny. When nearly everyone's mum was at home when the kids got there.. When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it. When being sent to the head's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc. Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! (and some of us are still afraid of them.) Didn't that feel good?
Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that! Remember when....
Decisions were made by going " eanie meanie minie mo " "Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest. Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly". The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs. And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one. t was unbelievable that 'British Bulldog 123' wasn't an Olympic event. Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult. Nobody was prettier than Mum. Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better. Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin. Ice cream was considered a basic food group. Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true. Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.
Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from their "grown up" life...
I DOUBLE-DARE YOU

Playing with pitch on the road on a hot day.The joy of finding a big bubble and messing in it with alolly stick. cider lollys New shoes or white socks. Dads pay night. A brand new co;ouring book and crayons. Pretending to have headache and having a day off school, with above if lucky. New school exercise books. Playing out in the dark.

Making a slide in the middle of the road when the snow has fallen. Being the first to walk in the snow and watch your footprints behind you. Bonfire Night and the excitement of opening your box of fireworks. Holding that jacket potato from the bonfire with gloved hands and tasting the delicious contents steaming in the cold night air. Learning how to crack open Walnuts on Christmas day by squeezing two together in your hand. Learning how to whistle, whilst driving everyone mad. The smell of a new book. The smell of your mum's baking when coming home from school. Watching television for the first time and thinking 'what a miracle'. Getting into a freshly laundered bed on a Summer's night. The smell from the pavements in the Summer after a downpour. The feeling of utter elation at your first kiss.

The colours on boxes of fireworks and xmas paper etc.All primary colours I realize now. I was a tomboy too.Playing cowboys and indians.Sometimes on arm of chair with string made into stirrups and reins. Having a meal at anybody elses house.Favourite was a pal where they shared big pile of chips and bread and marge round the table ,coversd in newspapers. Going to fair at park at about 12 and dressing my 10 yr old niece like Lolita so as not to ruin my imagined street cred. Bunty ,Judy,Jackieand Dandy ,Beano,Beezer,Topper.Played with a boy ho got loads of comics and annuals. Dreaming of owning a pony.Going to boarding school, where I could take my dream pony.I think all this came from reading too many Enid Blyton books.Glad to see that these days kids books are about all sorts of heroes.Rich and poor. Those picnics The FAMOUS FIVE used to have.Jeeez.Full hams,Giant pork pies,Iced buns with a cherry on top!Fresh milk from the friendl farmer. Nearest we got was camping out in back garden in tent made from blankets.only picnic was a bottle of cider between brother and his mate. Going to local jumble sales with same brother. He always dashed to costume jewelry to get a broach for mam.Id dash to high heels and handbags for my older sister.

Hi Jean, It was the 1st of May....MAY DAY.....we all dressed up as a Bride and Groom, even a sweep......plus the Molly Dancers. Traditionally, we danced around the May Pole......they even celebrate it at Quarry Bank Mill every May Day where you can see children dressed in Victorian costume dancing around the May Pole with their coloured ribbons.

H Catherine, I remember the White Van coming to Clayton. It came into my street, Iredine Street, and I went in with my mum for my Diptheria injection and got a bag of Dolly Mixtures for my pains. I still remember the smell of the Methylated Spirits in the van and I still have the scar on my arm.

Hi everyone, What lovely nostalgic postings but what can I say except..."Been there, seen it, done it!" One thing strikes me though how easy you lot seem to have had it. For example I couldn't get out on a Saturday morning and go looking for bottles to take back to the corner shop to get a few pence for the Tuppeny crush at the Majestic Cinema. Then I had to Zeboe the Old range or go looking for Joey Gresty the old rag and Bone man on his old horse and cart for donkey stones ("White or yellow young man" he used to say. He even had manners in those days). Then there was Bill from the Co-op whose horse used to be on auto drive. She knew every stop on his round and would wait whilst he laddled out the milk at the back yard gate, which you could actually taste in those days. I remember in Winter too trying to walk delicately on my clogs to School to form a build up of snow/ice stilts on the soles and trowing snowballs at the "Parkie" on the rec. Hiding on the bridge over the Canal (Bridgewater) at Paticroft and letting loose with your gattie at the horse's backsides as they were pulling the barges towards Barton Aqueduct. Boy" you've said it all. Those really were halcyon days indeed. I pity the poor children of to-day who will never know or experience "Life"
Cest le Vie!
Brian
p.s. How have you guys got your pictures on the board? I haven't sossed it out yet.
