I was just speaking to my grandad who's 85 and lived in Gorton all his life. He was saying he was in a gang as a teenager called the 'Lord Street Arabs' I was just wondering if anyone had ever heard of them and also was it common back then to be in a gang.

Lord Street Arabs have been mentioned before, although some time back. They're a bit like an urban legend, we all had heard of 'em and some of their tales were legendary, but I don't recall ever meeting one ... so your Grandad's a living legend!
I was 10 in 1945, as were most of my mates, and we had a gang of sorts which lasted until about 1953 when National Service claimed most of us. We were from Gloucester, Middlewood and Lord Streets in the main, but we were depressingly lawful by Crips and Bloods standards.
The most oft-related story of the Arabs was about a battle royal they were reputed to have had in Brunswick Street against an Ardwick mob. The cops were supposed to have stood by and let them go for it, and Lord Street won of course. Wonder if Grandad was there?

I'm going to ring my grandad tonight so I shall ask him a bit more about it and let you know.
