My first home was in Brougham Street just opposite Brook House flats next to The Rake pub. I thought I had gone back to the dark ages after living in Brook House ,there was no bathroom, no hot water or inside loo. I went home every time I wanted a bath .Not a good start to married life. I used to take my washing to my mams so she could take it to the wash house in the flats.

My first place was in Chorlton on Egerton Rd North...it was a 1bed flat and i had just got married...1965..I figured that as we had no property or much money or furniture that we should emigrate to America with no job/$80/ nofriends or rellies.....We couldnt lose anything because we didnt have anything to lose...Someone in Chicago said I should literally plead with Sears to give me a job, which I did (3 times)and I;m still working for them since 1965.................Ian..vancouver..

My first home was in Brougham Street just opposite Brook House flats next to The Rake pub. I knew a family called Berisford who lived near there or on that street?

My first flat was at the top of Southall street cheetham.Next to Strangeways and a Dairy. They were old flats and rent was 19shillings.Poxy bedsit at time was 5£.It had 3 large rooms.Cold tap and outside toilet. The good bit was that there was a real mix of people.Several italian families.Umberto off radio lived there. As it was a teenage marriage it didnt last long.It was heaven when I left and went back to the comfort of home in Withington. This didnt last though.Id tasted freedom and soon got a council house on Langley estate.A prowler tried to get in first night there!Certainly toughened up from the mard arse I was there.Stayed 13 yrs.

Hi Angela, I remember the buildings in Cheetham Hill near Strangeways, I used to live in the Knowsley in the early 70s and my best friends lived in those buildings...God what we got up to!! Makes me realise how the world has now changed and how protective I am over my children now. Do you remember the Boyles, June, Diane,Janette, Stewart (can't remember the little one) and Angela who was my best buddy for years. Debbie x

My first house was next door to my mums. in Sandywell Street No 37 Higher Openshaw. I went to see the area recently, a trip down memory lane so to speak, and the house is still there. but all modernised and looks good except Wheler street school is now gone and is now a housing estate.

Hi Olly. The stage row was at the beginning of Sandywell Street from Ashton Old road. but Ive noticed you were there in the 80 s, and Im talking of the 40s to 70 s. so maybe it was long gone then. I drove thro there recently doing a down memory lane thing. shouldnt have done it. has my dear old mum use to say , never go back. and... it was sad. whoever is in charge has ripped the heart out of the place and i have just found out via one of the members that they are pulling down the Alhambra. thats progress for you, or is it just me a soft sentimental old un Kay

My first 'home' was at The New Millgate Hotel in New Millgate, Manchester. Opposite Chethams Music School. I was a Receptionist there and lived-in at the top of the hotel. I loved the independence after being at home but then I moved to London in January 1967 and couldnt begin to count the amout of bedsits, shared flats etc. that I lived in until I got my own place in Muswell Hill in 1972......lived there for 11 years before my return to my home roots in Manchester. Strangely enough, I'd moved back to London tomorrow if I could afford it - I absolutely loved the 17 years I lived there.

Hi there everyone, I lived with my parent's at 46 Ivygreen Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, until the day I got married in 1968. We then went to live in Dartmouth Road, Chorlton, with some friends, and left in 1969, to come to Tipperary. We then rented a house and eventually bought a site to build our own house, where I have lived ever since. Times have been tough, but then they are for most people. With the debt crisis here in Ireland, I am thinking maybe it is time to move again, where to - who knows.

My first move, when I married for the first time, was to 35 Lord Street, Gorton. I forget how much the rent was, but we had a bedroom and shared with the resident family for other facilities. After my second marriage, we rented a house in Forden Street, Openshaw, number 31, for 2 quid a week. I'll bet Olly read the meter, there. ;D
