I AM INTERSTED IN HISTORY OF THE NICO (MICKLE) DITCH.THE DITCH IS A LINEAR EARTHWORK THAT RUNS BETWEEN ASHTON AND STRETFORD. I REMEMBER IT AS A SMALL BROOK THAT WAS SITUATED AT THE SIDE OF THE PATH BETWEEN MELLANDS AND THE GM BUSES SOCIAL CLUB. IT CAN ALSO BE SEEN ON DENTON GOLF COURSE AND PLATT FIELDS. IT WAS CONSTRUCTED SOME TIME BETWEEN THE ROMAN WITHDRAWAL FROM BRITAIN AND THE NORMAN CONQUEST,POSSIBLY IN THE 7TH CENTURYAS A BOUNDARY,OR MAYBE A DEFENSIVE EARTHWORK.LEGEND HAS IT THAT THE DITCH WAS COMPLETED IN A SINGLE NIGHT BY THE INHABITANTS OF MANCHESTER AS A PROTECTION AGAINST THE VIkINGS!! I HAVE A FEW PHOTOS FROM THE MANCHESTER IMAGES ARCHIVE,BUT IF ANYONE COMES ACROSS ANYMORE,I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU.IT IS A SCHEDULED MONUMENT THAT NOT MANY PEOPLE IN MANCHESTER ARE AWARE OF. LETS GET THE TIME TEAM DOWN TO DO A DIG !!! HAHA,I WOULD LOVE THAT. IF ANYBODY FINDS ANY BOOKS OR ANYTHING RELATED TO THE DITCH,PLEASE LET ME KNOW..THANKS...Mike.

HIYA GORTONBOY.....JUST A QUOTE FROM A LOCAL SITE.... PLATT FIELDS Nico Ditch "Part of the Very Ancient Mickle or Great Ditch sometimes called Nico Ditch Well-known A.D.1200. Extending over Five Miles from here to Ashton Moss and Bounding Several Townships Described fully in Vol. xxiii. of Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society". The above quote has been lifted from the inscribed stone placard situated beside Nico ditch, which runs through the park. The ditch is said to have formed a defensive line against Danish or Viking raiders attacking up the Mersey. The story is that it was dug in the space of one night - quite a feat in the nineteenth century-as it measures at five miles, 183 yards. NEWS TO ME THAT IT STARTED THERE.........
