The footballers of today may be overpaid, namby-pamby tarts who drive around in 100-grand cars, but at least they don't hit the fans. Well, Cantona excepted, of course! Many years ago, when Denis Law was in his second spell with City, I was a star-struck youngster hanging around outside the ground before a game when I saw the man himself running towards the player's entrance, pursued by a small mob of kids. Here was my opportunity to ask him to scribble his name on a piece of paper which I could treasure for ever and ever. I stepped in front of him, my little heart beating madly, my mouth dry and I said "Excuse me, Denis, can I have your autograph, please?" Then the great one spoke to me. Without even breaking his stride, he said (and I'll remember it for ever), "Get oot o' the way, son." and slapped me round the side of the head! I never thought of him in the same way after that and even now, when he turns up on the telly, I look at him and think, "There's that Scottish bloke who clouted me."

I suppose he was sick of being pestered by kids like me. Anyway, I forgave him after he scored against United!
