Hi Lin, Would you like to open that thread? I think its a good one. You need to do it yourself to put your name to it and who started it. How about naming it: MY FIRST JOB(s).......its a start at least and I think its a good start. Well done Lin.

My first job was at Burlington Catalogues but it was boring so I went to Secretarial College and then worked as Secretary for a Jewish Raincoat company in Cheetham Hill. After working there for three years, I fancied a change and went to work in Spring Gardens in Manchester for Chadwicks of Oldham as a Receptionist, then onto Hyde as a Secretary for an engineering company(very boring), more receptionist work before defecting to London in 1966.

Hi Lisa R. I've had many jobs, hotel receptionist, worked at the golf and country club down here in Cornwall, had a dab at hairdressing...even done chef work in the golf and country club, but trained as a seamstress and machinist, all down South. I also worked in shops like woolies, done a 6 week stint as a secretary but didn't like that, worked in factories etc, probably too many jobs to mention, restless feet Lin

Hi Lin
My first job was as an office junior for a fruit and veg distributor to schools. The place was called Eugene Elliott and was situated in I think "New Cross" near to oh lord have forgotten the streets now, near to the old Evening Mail building and not far from Smithfield Market. I used to have to walk through the market with all the firms wages, in fact my boyfiend at the time who later became my husband, who later became my ex-husband !! wrote to the Manchester Evening News saying it was scandalous a young 16 yr old had to walk through the market with all that money. I didn't care mind as I walked passed the loveliest guy in the market !!! I learnt how to use the switchboard and then type and eventually I taught myself audio typing and left to work at St Andrews House as a copy typist. We had some fun there though and the boss was lovely. He was George Elliott and his partner was a Nat Meek. Alan Wall was the boss of the guys delivering the veg to the schools and always shouted specially at me, he frightened the life out of me, but eventually I came to like him. I made many friends there who I am no longer in touch with, Linda Cleworth, Eunice and so many names I have forgotten, but often wonder where they are. Happy days.

Hi Vivien....Yes happy days, I don't think people are quite so friendly these days as they used to be, which is understandable living in todays world, sadly you couldn't walk through the market these days without fear of being attacked.

STEADY ON YOU TWO.......you'll be getting all excited with your memories and the Ian McShane Eyes.........Do any of you remember your first boyfriend and his name? I mean FIRST by the one you fell in love with or had a schoolgirl crush on. Mine was a boy in Clayton called Vincent Lawler and he had Elvis Presley eyes. My next one was called Raymond Taylor and came from Droylsden. When I used to go away to my parents' caravan he wrote to me and I remember the thrill of collecting his letter from the farmhouse. I ate my breakfast rather too quickly and ran down to the beach to be alone with 'my love letter'. He'd enclosed a tiny photograph and I wish I'd kept it. He promised to 'be good' while I was away and I believed him. Silly fool. My heart was broken but I can still remember when he first kissed me. My very first kiss and I thought my head would explode and thought my parents would guess by the look on my face, which was all flushed, so I ran upstairs to bed without my cocoa - it must have been love.......... AND I was only 14.

Yes I can remember him - but can't say too much as he is a member of manmates I think. I do remember another one though, Roy from Barnsley. We were on a scool trip to Staithes Nr Whitby and he had such a broad accent - we used to take the mickey out of it. Anyway he wrote to me too and my Mum saw the letter and said I musn't have said anything nice to him by what he replied !!!! I never heard from him again - I only threw the letter away a few years ago.

Hi Lin, I think we could reminisce all day about the things we did as children or teenagers and we all seem to have had similar experiences. It must have been the era we were born in because we were (or seemed) very innocent in those days. If I kissed a boy I thought I was committing the ultimate crime, and even thought I'd get pregnant just by kissing, until someone told me the truth and I didnt believe them..........it sounded much too far-fetched to be true
