does anybody out there remember the beat era in the sixties , in Manchester town centerer. I myself was a patron of the three Coins, later became Beat City , it was situated on Kennedy St, it had no drinks license but you could get a pass out (a blue stamp on the back of your hand to get back in again) We went in the pub next door called The vine inn. Jimmy Seville had something to do with the club for he was always there arriving in his little mini to see how things were doing

Hi Johnny, I remember the Twisted Wheel and the Oasis. The Twisted wheel had some good groups on but I was always a bit uncomfortable with the decor, very dark and dingy. I started off at the Plaza on Oxford Street where I used to sit at the bar next to the dancefloor with a very young Jimmy Savill when he was the dj there. I remember going up that long flight of stairs to the club when I wore rock'n'roll skirts with layers of underskirts with all the boys trying to look up my skirt. No wonder they always said "You go first"........

Aah The Twisted Wheel, I seem to remember that Coca Cola used to cost 2/6 a bottle, there were rumours of pep pills being available but never actually came accross any. I also remember Oasis but it was a bit beyond my pocket in those days.

Reviving an old thread here Takis and Top of the Town were owned by the Rowntrees group, that was run by the Partakis brothers Mr George and Mr Paul. they also owned Rowntrees Spring Gardens and Rowntrees Sound in Hanging Ditch. Sound was my main hangout, but we would visit all the other clubs as well. As 15/16 year olds we started at places like the Jungfrau, and The New Century Hall as well as The Wheel, they only sold Coka Cola, Fanta orange and Frothy Coffee. From the Wheel you could go through the Rising Sun and turn left up to the Oasis, which later became Sloopy's. The Frau became Time and Place, and round the corner was Nice and Easy, eventually they became one big super club. The Manchester club scene in the middle to late sixties was fantastic. In the seventies we would go to Tiffany's on Oxford road on a Sunday night, I met my Wife there. Thats enough rambling for now, I could go on about our adventures in downtown Manchester all day, got to get some work done now!

Wow Hurdsey, You've brought back some memories. I cant remember the names of all the clubs I frequented in and around Manchester City Centre. There was once I used to visit in or around Spring Gardens which was more like a proper club with a man playing a white grand piano and you could dance on a very small floor. It was more upmarket than the usual clubs which had bands playing. Dont recall its name but I used to go there most Saturdays to see what the talent was like. They only allowed you in if you were 'properly' dressed. Do you know its name? I used to go to the Twisted Wheel and enjoyed the dark corridors which did lead somewhere ........also the Cabaret Club where I saw my first ever striptease.

I have looked on Manchester beat.com. I also have the book "It happened in Manchester" by Alan Lawson, it's a good read, and details all the clubs around Manchester in the sixties.

Hi Hurdsey, No, not rich - just a gal with high hopes of meeting a rich man . Most of the girls wore evening or c*cktail dresses and there was a small dancefloor (couldnt hold more than 6 couples). It was somewhere in the region of Spring Gardens and they had a guy playing Scott Joplin type music. The drinks were a bit pricey so we always managed to make one drink last a long time. Dont know of anyone who remembers the name of the place......wish I could remember it. Wow Hurdsey, You've brought back some memories.
