Hi.. ....Stewarts--- Facing the Apollo in Ardwick is still there albeit empty and derelict......(mar 2006)...They had door-door salesmen who collected your payments each week.....They knew when you would be coming to the end of your payments and induce you to buy more furniture or carpets etc....on tick.............I worked in the wholesale end and Stewarts were a customer...I was always impressed because they worked on a fair margin of profit compared to say Ridings Stores....A great blk and wht movie with Ian Hendry and my still heart-throb June Ritchie circa 1963 called "Live Now-Pay Later".. typified Stewarts.......Ian...Vancouver..

HI I THINK YOU GOT THE WOOLERTONS CASH COINS ,AND YOU PAID FOR IT BACK WEEKLY WITH INTEREST. IT JUST FELT LIKE YOU WERE BUYING THE GOODS. I WORKED FOR THE LONDON MANTLE COMP IN DALE ST, IT USED TO P**S ME OFF ,BECAUSE THE POOR PEOPLE THAT CAME IN HAD A CHIT FOR A SAY A COAT,AND THE CHIT HAD A CODE ON IT,IF IT WAS SAY GS IT WOULD BE £10 IF IT HAD SAY AS IT WOULD BE £20 ,LETS JUST SAY THE POOREST PEOPLE GOT CHARGED THE TOP PRICE,SICK OR WHAT. STEWARTS OF ARDWICK GREEN WERE VERY FAIR WITH THEIR CHARGES. BABS

Just thought I'd let you know that the derelict Stewarts building at Ardwick Green has been completely demolished this past week, it is so much lighter now when you approach the roundabout from Hyde Road.
