The long awaited (by some) Final Metro link to Ashton Under Lyne opens tomorrow 9th October. Currently the trams have been terminating at Droylsden, but from tomorrow it will be possible to travel all the way from Bury via Manchester city centre to Ashton without having to change trams. The same of course applies the other way. One can go from Ashton to Bury on the same tram. The tram stops at Bury Interchange which is directly outside the famous Bury market.

I travelled to Ashton Under Lyne on the new Metro yesterday. Everything was fine until you pass the Droylsden stop. The stop at The Snipe stops a long way from the retail park, which I thought would have made more sense. There is a large area opposite the retail park which would have been ideal for shoppers. I don't know why they didn't put the stop there. The same applies along Lord Sheldon way. instead of stopping at the very large Cinema leisure and restaurant complex it stops about three or hundred yards past it, which involves crossing at a pedestrian crossing on a very busy dual bypass and walking back a few hundred yards. not so bad a on a nice day, but not much fun on a cold darky rainy night.
This is an update on my original post, after giving it some thought with regard to the Metro stops at The Snipe retail park and Lord Sheldon Way.

Why don't you send in a comment to TfGM, John? I'm sure they ought to know that the stop was positioned in the wrong place.

Wait until the snow comes the trams won't be stopping at all.......because they won't be running. A waste of money, there is already a good bus and train service, and who in their right mind would wish to visit Ashton or even Tameside anyway. I live there and the whole nine towns that make up the place are filthy holes.

I agree with you Cicero. Even though I use the tram a lot because it's closer to my home there was no real need for it. The bus service is perfectly acceptable. The stops are quite far apart which immediately rules out a lot of people using it. I get on and off at the Clayton Hall stop and most days I see people using it without bothering to buy a ticket, which is probably the attraction. Since the first day it started running I have only seen ticket inspectors 3 times on that route.

Do you remember the Manchester Corporation Buses and the very few inspectors that you saw.It was the same with the trains...one could use the electric line into London Road and board a train to Birmingham and not even see an inspector... once past Stockport.... not a chance of being asked to show a ticket..how do I know you may ask?....the company I worked for sent me to that city for six months. BTW the same applied to the return trip Birmingham to London Road (Piccadilly)

I have just used the tram to Rochdale great except that it terminates at the railway station which is about a mile from the centre and the walk back is all uphill.I will not be using it again until it gets to the bus station,if ever.I used it to call on Alf Proctor who now lives in Bacup. As some members will know Alf has a lot of paintings on this site.On my visit I saw most of his works and never cease to be amazed at his talent, tgalk about Lowry!!!!!

Hi,Alf has a fantastic memory and pubs are his specialty ,he must have painted about 20 ,most from memory I believe. Some of his line drawings are brilliant full of detail.I will be seeing Alf in the not too distant future but will be using the bus if the metro isn't completed.Apparently the new bus station is open but the trams have not been operative I understand.I have been in touch with GMPTE but had no reply as yet.I will certainly give him your best wishes on my next visit,we do Skype most days.
