After the death of my mother a few weeks ago there are no more family connections to the town, we have all moved out to 'the sticks'' family history runs from her granddad and grandma living in Collyhurst/Red Banks areas about a hundred or so years ago, the (rented) family home was in time moved around to Miles Platting and finished in the Crumpsall area, but now apart from maybe a vist to a show (Went to see George Thorogood at the Apollo last week) I will have no real reason to vist Manchester again, should I be happy or sad about that?. I still like the place but it is just too crowded for me, but it is my home town.

Hi Southampton, So sorry to hear about the death of your mother. It's always sad when home ties are cut because of a family bereavement but don't forget that you are still a Manchester Lad. You might not wish to come back to Manchester now but you can still keep in touch with your roots via Manmates. I, for one, would be sad to lose you Southampton, so please stay in touch. Most cities are over-crowded now and I am always glad to get back home when I have been to Manchester city centre. Hope to see you soon on here.

I left Manchester for Vancouver in 1965 but am lucky enough to visit once or twice a year...I was brought up in Longsight then Stockport..and born in Second St .Trafford Park...Dad was the manager of Rileys Stores on Hyde Road -Gorton for 50yrs...He was born in Gorton-Ellesmere St and knew practically everybody in West Gorton......His shop allowed credit and dad would have to go out "collecting" at least once a week from delinquent clients...I enjoy wandering around town and looking at places I worked at--envisaging the old bosses remembering office affairs, the tears, the fun and the antics of my workmates--all gone now in those particular buildings around Dale St , Swan St, Addington St, Piccadilly etc....Great memories...I'll be over again in Sept for 6 weeks and will do my pub rounds and remember good times working in town in the 60s.....

as well as 1984 and Animal Farm and other books George Orwell wrote 'Coming up for Air' which was a short read about a guy called George Bowling who due to having a joyless life decided to spend a long weekend back in the village of his youth called Lower Binfield where he was always happy, but of course things are not the same and the whole weekend turns out to be a waste of time and money, there was just nothing the same as it was in his younger days, the whole weekend just brought him disillusionment. so if I dont return to Manchester for say 15 years I wonder what my feeling and memories will be like then?. Ok I left Manchester for about 20 (1968-1989) to live and work in Southampton but I did return often for lots of family events, wedding, big birthdays etc, but as stated no members of the family now live in the town , so I guess I will have to wait and see about "happy or sad?".
