I am sat here at home waiting for the man from the water company to come and exchange the water meter, turned on the TV and its showing 'Are you Smarter Than a 10 Year Old' the contestant was a guy who works in the financial dept of a large firm and has qualifications in maths, the question was "if it takes John one hour to walk 5 miles how long will it take him to walk 1 mile?" the guy took about four minutes to come up with a answer of "one hour 15 minutes" um yea a little bit wrong there mister, and as stated he works in a financial dept !!. and in 'The Chase' (ITV ) a contestant was asked "which of the 3 major parties had links to the union movement, Labour, Liberal, or Conservative" the guy who was in his mid 30's and so should have known the answer in a flash, replied "conservative" two very easy questions but two very wrong answers, who says that as a nation we have not dumbed down over the past 20 years or so? the more we have done by machines/computers etc the less we use our brains and the above is what we come down to,

Just like to point out that when I said who says that as a nation we have not dumbed down over the past 20 years or so? I was refering not to the graduates/ school kids etc but the people who set the standards.

Hi Southampton, Surely the students can only follow what is set down for them, hence the dumbing-down of exams etc. After all the recent mistakes made they are now thinking of going back to the old way of teaching. Will they ever learn?

I totally agree with you Southampton. Maybe if we got back to conventional teaching in schools and stopped relying on computers to 'teach' us, then we wont have brainless idiots on the tv embarrassing us. I am still amazed at the amount of presenters on tv whose grammar is appalling and I am still hearing so called 'well-educated' people pronounce the eighth letter of the alphabet as HAITCH and I want to scream at them......"Its not HAITCH its AITCH" with the emphasis on the breathless letter H. [/quote I have known this for the best part of my life....almost 80 years!!!! Thanks for reminding people Lisa]
