Hi Normal Welcome to the Chatline and Manmates. There are loads of members here on the Chatline who ALL have great memories of Belle View. Keep logging on and you'lll get a few responses, hopefully. If I remember correctly, one of our members used to work as a waiter at Belle View so watch this space. Glad to see you on the Chatline.

HI NORMA..WELCOME TO MANMATES AND CHATLINE... WE WERE ALWAYS AT BELLE VUE AS KIDS, BUT I MOVED DOWN SOUTH WHEN I WAS SEVEN, BUT USED TO GO BACK TO MANCHESTER SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR, I EVENTUALLY MARRIED AND HAD KIDS OF MY OWN, AND USED TO TAKE THEM THERE AS WELL. SUCH A PITY IT'S NO LONGER THERE AS I'M SURE IT WOULD STILL BE A BIG ATTRACTION.

Hi Norma, If your grandad was called Hubert Thornton he was our next door neighbour in Gloucester St, off Cross St as was, for many years. If he wasn't - sorry I spoke! Cass

Hi, Isaw in the guest book Mary Howarth was asking if anybody remembered Johnny's marching girls or the show "the storming of Quebec" on firework island. My cousin Leonard Crockford, married one of the girls - a lovely girl called Ann. Len lived in Thomas Street Gorton. They moved to Australia and then to New Zealand. The shows on firework island were fantastic for the time. I used to watch it every week after the wrestling. I knew every line. The other show I remember was "the relief of Lucknow" The firework displays were wonderful and could be seen and heard for miles. We could see the rockets from our back bedroom window in Openshaw. The Johnny was Johnny Hoskins the manager of the Aces.

My mam and dad used to take us to Belle Vue when we were kids on the rides, to the zoo and to see the fireworks display in the winter months. When they couldn't afford to take us we could see the fireworks for free from up the railings that went round our school yard. Hague St in Newton Hweath. Frank Buxton

Hi Tony Marley, How lovely to see you on the Chatboard after a long while. How are you Tony? It sounds like you had a great Christmas being looked after by your sister and I hope they all enjoyed their presents. What presents did you get? Are you still writing your poems? It would be nice to see one of the poems here on the Chatboard if you have the time. Take care Tony and hope to hear from you again soon.

I work at Gala Bingo at Belle Vue . Apparently that is where the pond used to be which could explain why there is problems where we have to watch for flooding in the cellar when it rains.

Hi Norma. I used to love the Top Twenty club.....was it top twenty or Top Ten? Jimmy Saville/Dave Eager used to DJ with Jimmy arriving in his bubble car or Rolls Royce. Saw some top groups there too over the years. Sat nights at the Queen Elizabeth were my favourites, just dancing all night long to tamla motown it was fab. My friends and I also worked at the Cumberland and Queen Elizabeth bars for some extra money, that would have been 1968/69. We did a spot of bar work at the Kings Hall with the wrestling crowd too.
Those days and nights at belle vue were some of the happiest times me and my friends had.

Hi Dotty, I think every sane Mancunian has lovely memories of Belle View. Everyone seemed to flock there at WhitSun and, even though my pocket money had run out, I still stayed until very later. I also went dancing at the Elizabethan Suite on a Saturday. I remember the revolving stage with the Orchestra going off for their break. The bars were always packed and if you found an empty table you thought you'd struck gold. I remember only drinking then for the thirst - Shandy, then back to the ballroom to dance until my feet hurt. The Ladies' Room smelled of Miner's Hair Lacquer which made your hair like cardboard, especially if it rained, and you had to queue just to get to the mirrors !!! If you look on the Belle View Thread you can see my experiences in the Crooked House - x-rated of course!!!!! Oh, how innocent I was then. I'd give a fortune for some of that innocence now.......

Do any old codgers out there remember Old Tyme dancing in the Elisabethan Tues/Thurs in the early 50's? A crowd of us used to meet just inside the entrance and it was handy if you was a singleton cos there was always lots of unattached girls for partners. Indeed, I met my wife there. We also went dancing at Gorton Con Club, North Rd. Co-op and Levvie Baths. Happy days..Bill
