Here's a good tip Lin.
Before putting plants into tubs and containers after the winter you have to empty all the soil out and pick out all those little white grubs in the soil which turn into Weavils and eat the roots of your new plants. Pick them out and squash them then you can replace the soil and top up with new compost. You have to do this every year - no need to throw away all the compost, just refresh it.

YOU CAN USE JEYES FLUID FOR DISINFECTING YOUR SOIL.....DILUTED 3 TABLE SspoonS TO 5 LITRES.......LEAVE A WEEK PICK ALL THE WEEDS ON TOP...AND MOSS.... AND IF YOPU WANT TO FRESHEN THE SOIL UP EMPTY SOIL OUT....BREAK IT UP PUT IT BACK...THEN LEAVE ANOTHER WEEK THEN YOU CAN PLANT THE SOIL GETS COMPACTED OVER THE YEARS...(JUST LIKE THE TWO DISCS IN MI BACK).... THE OTHER METHOD WHAT WAS USED YEARS AGO ON THE PARKS WAS STERILIZATION.......A CONTAINER WITH SOIL IN....WITH A HEAT SOURCE UNDER IT (FIRE).........KILLS EVERY THING........

Olly, you can also disinfect your soil by pouring boiling water over it to kill any bacteria and parasites etc. The soil needs to cool completely before re-planting. Hi Jan, The little blighters will eat 'anything' and, although you might guard your Poppies with your life, they will find a way of eating the buds. I wouldnt mind if they ate them but they just bite into them then throw them on the lawn.....I'm seriously thinking of asking my neighbour to 'to do the decent thing' and eradicate them once and for all from my garden...... hi lisa thanks for solving my mysterey i never knew that squirels ate buds off plants i thought they only ate nuts which i have been buying for them but like you i too have poppys its a lovely white one called the royal wedding and i only put in 3 weeks ago ive been witin pationatly for it to flower and will now guard it with my life so them little bugers dont eat it thanks

I have just noticed that all the buds from my three Clematis have been eaten by the squirrels. Bought a high-powered pump action water gun yesterday to give the blighters a good soaking but I doubt it will do any good......has anyone any ideas on how to get rid of the squirrels? They are even too quick for our local cats. My cat Tilly used to be able to catch them and eat them and bring their tails to be as a present but she has long departed and they are now thriving.....ten of them under my window the other day.

IF YOU LOOK ROUND AT YOUR ROSES.....YOU WILL PROBABLY SEE QUITE A BIT OF MILDEW.....IF ITS SPREAD TO THE FLOWER BUDS AS WELL....YOU WONT GET A DECENT FLOWER ANYWAY.....SO CUT OUT THE EFFECTED PARTS ...LIKE A PRUNING....AND MAKE SURE YOU MULCH ROUND THE LOWER STEM......ONE BIG CAUSE OF MILDEW IS DRYNESS AT THE ROOTS......AND I KNOW THAT MOST PEOPLE DONT PLANT A ROSEBUSH TO ITS PROPER DEPTH......THE SITE OF A ROSE WITH ITS GRAFT AND TOP OF THE ROOTS SHOWING MAKES ME CRINGE........AFTER CUTTING ALL THE MILDEW OUT.......AND WITH THE MULCH......YOUR ROSES WILL COME ON WELL........ AN ADD ON TO ABOVE..... ....IF LIKE ONE OF MI CUSTOMERS YOU DONT WANT TO CUT OUT THE DAMAGED STEMS.....IF YOU HAVE A HOSE WITH A SPRAY --JET --MIST ECT.....USE THE SPRAY TO GIVE THEM A GOOD CLEANING...ITS OK.....

standard roses are usually bought in pots anyway lin.......so all you have to do is plant just below ground level....then the elements will do the rest.........ramblers like bush roses should just have the graft showing.......oh and the idea of giving a good watering after......washes the soil finely round the roots....and not with a rose on the watering can.....give them a good splash

How to prune, and when to prune Buddleia davidii Butterfly bushes. This group of shrubs flower on new growth made in the current year, so it is to your advantage to prune the shrub well to produce many flowering shoots.
The pruning should take place early in the spring - before growth starts proper. Prune the Buddleia down to around 30cm (12 in) from ground level at this time. There may already be sprouting shoots on the Buddleia in a mild spring. No matter - Prune it back hard. This will make the Butterfly Bush grow many new arching branches, that will have larger flowers than if it had not been pruned.
As well as this hard prune in the spring, it is also beneficial to prune off all the dead and faded flowers once the main flowering season is over. This will be of benefit to the plant - not having to produce seeds on the old flowers - and it will bloom again later on. Take off all of the dead flowers regularly, and your Buddleia will flower until well into the autumn.
Once you have finished pruning your Buddleia, you should end up with a cluster of stems no longer than 30cms.
For Buddleia bushes at the back of a large border, you can perhaps just cut back to around 60cm each year. This will have the advantage of the flowering stems starting higher up and you will be able to plant other shrubs and perennials under or near to the base. The arching stems of the butterfly bush will then be seen higher up at the back of the border.
