Hi Roy, Thanks for that. I will study it and give it a try. I have WindowsXPHome. It keeps telling me to 'Back-up' all my data but when I put in the cd's that came with my laptop (3 in all) it keeps telling me to put in the cd that came with Windows XP. I cant remember it coming with a Windows cd as it was pre-installed, or so the handbook says. I have a memory stick 1gb but dont know whether it will hold all my data. By the way, I'm a complete novice when it comes to computers so bear with me and I'll let you know if your suggestion works. Thanks once again.

Hi Roy, Tried doing what you said and there was an item with a YELLOW exclamation mark against it but wasnt confident enough to carry on with what they told me to do in case I messed it up.

Hi Vivien, Sorry I never noticed your request for help and only seen it with Tommy's reply. Tommy is basically correct in what he says but if you visit this site it will give the exact requirements needed. www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/sysreqs.mspxThe spec it mentions is for XP professional but that and the home version require exactly the same spec. I hope this helps you? Alan

Hi Tommy and Alan
Thanks for your replies. I am sure the computer will hold the xp because my husband's son said it has lots of room on it. We have been waiting for him to come over and sort us out but you know what kids are, so I thought I would try and do it myself. Thanks for your time.

Does anyone know how I can stop the pop-ups on both my hotmail and Manmates? I've just installed some new security downloads (with the help and advice of Alan, bless him) and the pop-ups have started. I've got my pop-up blocker ON in Tools, but the ads keep appearing. Its driving me mad - HELP !!!

Have you got a pop-up blocker program or a pop-blocker on your virus program?

Dont know Lin, dont confuse me. Its taken me ages to work out how to put the new security on. I only know that my Pop-up blocker in Tools tells me that its turned ON. I did look on the new security but there was nothing showing any pop-ups.

Hi Lisa,
Do you have the latest Internet Web browser. Microsoft is on IE 7 now. If you don't have this, and it only came out recently, then download from Microsoft. It is free and is part of the Vista package. But you don't have to have Vista. It has a built in Pop up Blocker. I have been using the beta version for nearly a year. If you do have it you could always try Google's pop up blocker. This is also free. You say your pop up blocker is switch on but it doesn't sound like it. Or perhaps you have it set too low. Check it in tools. I have mine set to medium.

Alan, We've bought the Computer Active magazine almost every fortnight for around four or five years now and I apologise to all MM members that I never thought to mention it on this thread! It is the best magazine for beginners and experienced users alike and includes step by step workshops for all manner of programmes. NOTE: Computer Active costs £1.49 every two weeks so it is obviously good value for money. The reason I am leaving this post is to alert MM members to another good computer magazine - WEBUSER - it has lots of useful information on using the internet. The cost is £1.95 every fortnight. It too offers good advice and workshops etc.

Hi Mo,
Yes! I have also been meaning to mention it (Computerative I mean) for a long time. So I am glad that Lisa, (my right hand woman) has done it for me. It is very good for beginners especially as it explains what the techno names mean, and, the workshops are great. I am finding a bit repetitive as far as workshops and things go as I have been getting it since day one and I have also done many courses on computers including computer repair and maintenance and Cisco Networking to name but two. But the news it brings and other articles makes it well worth the £1.49. I hadn’t looked at the price recently so imagined it was still about £1.40. I have a subscription to it, so I get if for under a pound. It used to sell at well under a pound when it first came out, some ten years ago, and even then it was good value for money. But nowadays there are loads of mags out there that are quite good. I have never read the Webuser you mentioned. I might try it sometime, if I can find the time that is?
Cheers, Alan

Need computer related questions answered?? Try the following website - it's mostly a forum very similar to Alan's Manmates layout but contains sections that deal with various computer related topics. It's as easy to register with as it was with MM too and it's free. www.webuser.co.uk/forums

Ever wanted to see what all the fonts on your pc look like? (I know you can view them from the Control Panel but it is a long winded affair!). You could always download a fontviewer programme from the following website:- www.ampsoft.net/utilities/FontViewer.phpThere's a choice of three downloads. I chose AMPsoft.net "ZIP" file (427KB) - once downloaded you'll need to click on it to unzip to a place on your pc. You'll then be able to use "Fontviewer.exp" to your hearts content (I right clicked it and added it to my desktop).

Jean - your problems regards MSN the other night were caused by MSN updating their network (again). I found I too couldn't log on and send an email or chat to anyone late at night (okay I mean early morning!!). Hope your still enjoying your holiday and your applying the suncream (as your godmother says) AND you are staying away from snakes. Thanks for the Birthday wishes - I got so many!! I got a smashing postcard from Wyn, along with the Birthday cards from her and Maureen in Oz and the squashed koala bear keyring HA! HA! Your card arrived safely too so thank you - how on earth you found the time to send it while packing for a holiday is beyond me! Hope you get a lovely tan.
PS Wyn is learning to bodysurf on holiday!!!

Why does my computer keep doing what I tell it to do, instead of what I want it to do ??

Because theyr'e not telepathic but pretty dumb, they can only do what you tell them however in the furure biological computers may change that.

I have added this to the Q & A Page for anyone that needs it. I copied and pasted it of course, Thanks Migky. Here is something for those who don't know how to copy and paste (Lisa, this means you )
How To Copy and Paste: Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text , then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the place you want to put what you have copied, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.
Cut and paste is the same as above, except you choose 'cut', instead of 'copy'. Shortcuts To Highlight: Press 'Ctrl' + 'A'. To Copy: Highlight an area, as shown above, then hold 'Ctrl' + 'C' (For Mac users 'Apple' + 'C'). To Paste: Click your mouse where you want the text pasted, and then press 'Ctrl' + 'V' (For Mac users 'Apple' + 'S'.
The ability to cut, copy, and paste is found in most programs. Sometimes, the ability to do these tasks via the mouse is disabled, but is still quickly achieved through the use of the shortcuts outlined above
I hope this help any that are having difficulty with copying and pasting?
Migky
