I remember we used to get money from the chippy for the aluminum pots steak puddings used to come in.
And because cheetham hill has a large Jewish community and they are not allowed to do things on a Saturday we used to light their fires for them for a few pennies.

Ive asked this one before, does anyone who lived round hyde rd gorton, remember a large hut in knutsford rd, on the left, that used to show films, I am positive Ive sat in there on wooden forms watching a film, thought cass might have remembered it, this would be round 1946--1950, just that theres only me remembers it, and you know what its like, your having your usual few drinks with your mates, you mention it, everything goes silent, and they look at you in disbelief

Hi Olly, the only hut I can remember on Knutsford Rd, was behind the doctors on the corner, and it ran along Agnew St(?). Think it was the Sally Ann. Did you have to sing hymns before they started the projector??? ;-) Cass

Hi Olly, I can relate to what you say about people going silent when you ask them if they remember a certain thing from the past. I remembered a fairground visiting some open ground opposite my old school in Clayton but no-one seemed to remember and I started to think I'd dreamt it. That is until an old school friend from Canada recently e-mailed me and asked me if I remembered the fairground. Eureka ! I didnt dream it after all and my sanity was restored. No comments please !!!

Heres one for you Lisa , my dad used to sweat a lot so he used to bathe in some stuff called Pongamatif Pottash , then he would leave it in the bath and all us kids would take turn soaking in this stuff ,it used to make you come out all brown skinned ( sort of instant suntan lotion in the bath ) Another thing he used to do was send me up to the pub with a jug for his mild beer then when I got home he would stick the poker into the fire till it was white hot then thrust it into his cold beer if we had a cold we had duck grease smeared over our chest and sent to bed ,if we had boils on our neck my mam made a hot drawing poltise on some lint and slapped that on for a few days bodzy

Hi Bodzy, I dont know about the Potash bath but I can remember the other things. My grandad used to put the hot poker in beer and I remember the goose fat and drawing ointment. Another thing I remember, but no-one else does, is my mum used to keep in the kitchen a bottle of Washing Liquor("Washer Liquor") A man delivered it to the door and it was dark brown thick jelly like liquid. My mum used it for washing the dishes and clothes - a little bit like today's washing up liquid, only brown. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

HI LISA..THAT THICK BROWN LIQUID SEEMS TO RING A BELL BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER FOR SURE...SO ANNOYING ISN'T IT WHEN YOU DO HAVE A VAGUE RECOLLECTION OF SOMETHING BUT CAN'T TOTALLY REMEMBER IT ALL?

Hi Lin, I can remember it VERY well but no-one else seems to know what I'm talking about. No change there !!!! Its like Olly said: when you remember something but others just go quiet when you ask and look at you strangely. I know it existed and I'm sure my mum wasnt the only one who had it delivered. A man also used to call at the house on a Saturday morning; he looked very furtive with mac and hat on. He always asked "Is your mum in?" and my mum took her purse and went to the door. When I asked who he was, she said "Ask no questions and you'll get told no lies". So I never asked again. My mum NEVER borrowed money from anyone and I know he wasnt an insurance man. I wondered if a he was a tramp and she was giving him money, but I guess I'll never know.

I remember the cheese of my childhood, and the bread that we cut with a knife. When the children helped out with the housework, and the men went to work, not the wife.
The cheese never needed an ice-chest, the bread was so crusty and hot. The children were seldom unhappy, and the wife was content with her lot.
I remember the milk from the billy, and the yummy rich cream on the top. Our dinners came hot from the oven, and not from a fridge in some shop.
The kids were a lot more contented, they didn't need money for kicks, but a game with their mates in a paddock, and sometimes the Saturday flicks.
I remember the shop on the corner, where a penn'orth of lollies were sold. Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic, or is it I'm just getting old?
I remember when the 'loo' was the 'dunny' And the pan man came in the night, It wasn't the least bit funny Going out the back with no light.
On daytime trips to the outhouse Many items of interest we saw, On the squares of cut-up newspaper That hung from a string on the door.
The clothes were boiled in a copper With plenty of rich creamy suds, And the ironing seemed never ending As Mum pressed everyone's duds.
I remember the slap on the backside And the taste of soap if I swore, Anorexia and diets weren't heard of And we hadn't much choice what we wore.
Do you think all that bruised our ego? Was our initiative quite destroyed? We ate what was put on the table, And I think life was better enjoyed.
