Back in February Bodzy mentioned the legendary Lord Street Arabs. There were plenty of tales about fighting and thieving, but I never met any of of 'em, and got the impression they might have been a pre-war gang - or even earlier. My particular mate in Lord St, from about 1945 onwards, was Geoff Gittings, and while we might have tried to live up to the legends we were tame by comparison. I've tried googling for them, but got nowt, anybody else got any information on 'em that might separate fact from fiction? Cass I knew Geoff Gittings and a few of his family he used to live about half way down Lord St (on the left coming up from Hyde Rd Also very nearby was the Hardcastles ,...Ronnie I knew , and the other week sombody said one of the Hardcastles was working as a steward at MUFC, they went to school with me ,but I haven't see them since, we used to sit outside Geoffs house on cushions , and I remember a street light being nearby which we used to swing on bodzy

What's that formula supposed to be, 6 Degrees of Contact??? If we keep this up we'll all turn out to be related ... I was in Geoff's house many a time Bodzy. There was him, his Mam and two brothers I think ... was Walter one of 'em?
We were the same age, and both started work at printing shops in 1950. I worked at Walkers Showcards behind Stevie Square, while Geoff was a machineman at the printers on Hyde Rd, opposite Cross St.
By the time we were 18 we both had different mates, I think we both went in the forces in 1953, and lost contact after that. Small world though ... Cass

Thanks for the Gallipoli slang site Olly. As you'll know Gallipoli is an emotive word in NZ and Aussie. The landings were a total c*ck-up in a military sense, but were the makings of the Anzac legend.
Anzac Day, 25th April, is one of the most important days in the antipodean calendar, and Dawn Parades aren't just well attended - they're being attended by bigger crowds every year - and they really are "dawn" parades, well before the sun comes up. Cass

Hi Cass, you are certainly right about Gallipoli, and the special place it has in the hearts of all Aussies and New Zealanders, it should also hold similar feelings for us Lancastrians, the Lancashire Fusiliers were awarded 6 Victoria Crosses at Gallipoli. Regards, Frank Walsh.

Hi Frank, yeah I remember that saying, "6 VCs before breakfast!" Oddly enough, another mate who I worked with at Walkers Showcards, and who lived next to Lord St in Wood St, was Jud Peake who did his NS in the LFs. Cass

hiya babs shingles remedy Apply apple cider vinegar, just as it comes from the bottle, to the skin area where the shingles are located, four times during the day and three times during the night if you are awake. The itching and burning sensation in the skin will leave usually within a few minutes after the vinegar is applied. Many old-timers swear by this treatment declaring that the shingles heal much more readily from the regular use of apple cider vinegar.

Hi Lin,
What a fabulous website, I used to love Belle Vue and I remeber the Elephant ride in the 1950's aged about 5 or 6 and feeding him half loaves of bread.
