Lin, I was talking about American (elastic) skipping somewhere on Manmates a while back but I can't find it now. Anyway, we used to thread elastic bands together to make one long loop. Then there'd be two girls (or boys) holding the elastic round their ankles and a third jumped up and then landed on the elastic. The elastic got raised each time to make it harder and there were a few other moves such as crossing the elastic over. Whenever I was at home on my own, or my siblings were off doing their own thing, I'd use the legs of chairs. Problem with this being that they often fell over and hurt me! Another game I loved was putting a tennis ball in a stocking and then standing against a wall, I would hit the ball left to right, over my head and between my legs. To this day I don't know why but I loved doing it!!! Another one was "cards" - we'd line cigarette cards in a row against a wall at an angle and then use another card to try and flick them down. I remember jacks - I was always envious because we couldn't afford to buy them (there were six of us kids and if one wanted something the others would too!). Marbles was another good game! My dad used to build marble alleys for my brother (but never us girls Boo Hoo).

What was the other one when you threw pennies against the wall seeing which one landed the closest... I did play marbles as well, but loved my jacks..of course there was the old hop Scotch as well....don't think kids play these games anymore do they? Lin

Lin, just remembered the comic I used to get each week - the name escapes me but it could have been "Judy" "Bunty"? On the back page was a paper doll and clothes to cut out. I did this religiously each week! I kept them all in an old shoe box. When we were little my gran had to move house and she had a "clear out" she gave all the granddaughters all her old porcelain dolls and we each got to choose the one we wanted. I chose one that came up to my hips. She became my "best friend" and I took her everywhere with me. She was tall enough to wear baby clothes and we used to buy these at jumble sales. I was playing leap-frog with her once and her foot broke off!! She wasn't my "friend" after that LOL. All the porcelain dolls were mistreated in some way or another and not one of them survived! I could cry now when I think of (a) the sentimental value and, of course, (b) the monetary value!!

Lin, lets not forget L e g o! I used to play with my brothers bricks whenever he wasn't around. I used to make dolls houses and, when he found them, he'd go mad. He got a meccanno set but I wasn't as keen on that - too fiddly for me. He had a scalextric too and we spent many a happy hour "racing" our cars. The cars were too fragile though and the amount of time my dad had to spend fixing them doesn't bear thinking about!! A few years ago we bought our son a scalextric thinking that surely they'd have improved the design by now. Sadly not, the cars undercarriages are still as fragile as ever and it ended up back in it's box! I used to love my friend's magnadoodle - bought my son one when he was little and used to love playing with that one too! I just haven't grown up LOL I was jealous of my sister - one Christmas she got a dolls house kit that was like nothing I had ever seen before. There were various thick, cardboard, sides which had either a doorway or window cut out, plus some blanks to use as solid walls. They were held together with see through clips. The kit came with a variety of pre-cut Wallpapers, flooring etc. We had many happy hours making houses - there were even different brick designs to use on the outside walls!! I have never seen anything like it in the shops since then and my mum doesn't remember where she bought it from!! Well you've really set me off - only came on to post my joke of the day LOL

Hi Little Mo, I remember those dolls well, I had one that was passed down to me that was my sisters, also had a coloured one, which I was awe struck with, it was the first coloured doll I had ever seen..I had that one when we moved to Devon, my Gran had bought it and sent it down to me. I had a Teddy bear that my dad bought me, had that till we moved to Cornwall and it got left in the house, I was gutted about it which seems silly because I was nearly 17.. I'm sure it would have been worth something by now, it was in really good condition. I used to by lots of comics as well, can't remember all the names of them now, I know I did like Topper and the Beano though...wasn't there one called Rover? Lin

I had a large dolls house, again I think it was passed on to me from my sister, along with a pram etc! but you know what, I think I was a bit more of a Tomboy climbing things I loved playing conkers as well ;D Lin

Lin, I've just changed the name of that comic I mentioned to BUNTY! It was the first word that came to me this morning. Closely followed by a memory of my first POST OFFICE that I got from Santa! Did anyone out there used to line their dolls and teddies up (like me) and play "hospitals" with them? Did anyone out there used to line their dolls and teddies up (like me) and play "school" - complete with a register of made up names??

Hi Lin, I remember the hoolahoop and spent hours doing it. I even managed to do it round my neck, egged on by my brother who hoped I'd choke myself I spent hours on a Bagatelle until my dad protested at the noise of the ball going down the holes and loved my grocer's shop complete with scales and real glass bottles filled with sweets. I always ended up in tears because my brother tried to pinch the sweets out of the jars . I think my favourites were my BIKE and my ROLLER SKATES. They kept me quiet for many long hours. I still have the scars on my knees from falling over on my skates. My bike was a reconditioned one but I didnt care, I loved it and would go EVERYWHERE on it. There were no locks on bikes then. I would just throw it down and pick it up whenever, and it seemed indestructible. It was a Raleigh (now made in Vietnam) and I still ride a Raleigh to this day(made in England).

Hi Lisa R I actually got quite good at the hoola hoop, could do several at once, also around the neck, arms and legs...didn't you find it used to hurt around the neck? I did, I was forever covered in bruises My bike was a raleigh as well, loved that bike and had it till I was 17. Lin

Hi Lin, I think the whole point of doing hoolahoop around my neck was so that I would get hurt, hence why my brother egged me on to do it so that I would choke. If I wore a scarf around my neck it wouldnt hurt as much. Arent brothers horrible?

Hi Lin, I think another one was DOBBERS..........I was taught to play marbles by my brothers who used to win all the marbles in the neighbourhood and had a very large collection, so I learned to be quite good at it. They taught me how to smash other players marbles too in the game. There was an upside to having brothers, although I cant think of many. The only other upside was if your brother was tall (mine was) you could use it to your advantage if you were being bullied and get your brother to beat them up.........

Hi Lin, I wish I could remember the names of all the marbles. WHERE ARE THE MEN FROM MM? Help, boys....... Maybe if I get the bag of marbles out I will remember their names. Where's Tommy, Joe, Tony et al.......maybe when they read our postings they will remember the names for us. Its going to bother me now all evening trying to remember their names. THAT IS until Judge John Deed comes on, then I'm in a world of my own. Babs knows what I'm like about Martin Shaw.......the phone goes on answerphone, the doorbell is unplugged, I get out my bottle of wine and for two hours I can go all doe-eyed..........

Hi Lin and Lisa
I remember putting my dress in my knickers so I could do handstands. In fact a friend used to say to me (when I was in my 20's) and a little the worse for wear hic "ok if you not drunk then do a handstand and off me and my mate Janet would go tucking skirts in our knickers and doing handstand at the ripe old age of 25 !!!!!. I have also had a memory of getting those paper type "bangers" out of the Beano - remember they were triabgle shaped and you thrust them forward and they "banged". I also used to make tents either with the clothes horse or (dare I say it) and this was in all innocents with my Mam's broom and the bedclothes !!! and eat my breakfast in bed. One year it had really snowed and my brother built an "igloo" onto our yard wall it was great as we could get in and out of it.

Hi Vivien, I was always doing handstands or cart wheels, walking like a crab bent over backwards.
I do remember those triangle things that banged...I had forgotten about those till you mentioned it...memories aye? also remember the clothes horse, which is known these days as an airer...all good fun.
